06/17/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Hercules was stiff, fearful and did not show social behavior during the assessment. The assessor moved slowly with him and although he remained tense and cautious throughout handling, he allowed all handling to be conducted. Hercules would approach the assessor when coaxed to be positioned for each item. During tag, he followed the assessor with a fearful, cautious body and continually gave the assessor whale eye but was unresponsive when touched and approached with coaxing once the game ceased. He had no interest in food or toys. Hercules took the rawhide away, body language was stiff. Hercules was surrendered to thee care center by his owner. The owner reported that Hercules does not do well with young children but prefers older children and adults. It was also reported that he is overprotective and does not get along with strangers at first. Upon intake, he was very reactive towards anyone who walked by him and lunged, trying to bite the medical handler. However, he seemed to calm a bit as he walked into the shelter. Throughout the assessment, Hercules remained cautious and stiff but did not escalate. The Behavior Department recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address his concerning behaviors around strangers and allow him to become acclimated to new people and new environments at his own pace.
