08/27/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: If you’re one that believes the eyes are the window to the soul, Hazel makes for the best living proof. And if you’re not….well, Hazel might change that! She has the kindest eyes and they are outdone only by her incredibly soft personality. She solicits attention from her cage with eye contact and tail wags, and when I approach, she does a little tap dance with her front paws. She quickly syncs with me on leash — staying at my side and frequently looking up to check in. Hazel seems housebroken and is reported to be successfully crate-trained. When I sit down on the bench in the yard, Hazel jumps up at my side, and manages to steal my heart in record time! Almost as soon as I ask her to “sit” she places her paw on me. She holds it there until I move my hand away, only to then offer me her other paw! Though she does love treats, her motivation doesn’t seem to be food, but human contact — a physical manifestation of the bond she is so eager to make. She loves to be petted, and a loving look is all it takes to push her over into belly rub position. She gives kisses very diligently and is not overbearing at all in her displays of affection — she’s very gentle and mild mannered. Every time I walk Hazel I fall more in love with her — she is really something special, and would be so happy to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!
08/15/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
The previous owner reports that Hazel is tolerant respectful and affectionate with children, but interacts in a somewhat rough manner because of her size. The owner also states Hazel is tolerant and respectful of larger dogs, but does not do well with smaller breed dogs. Hazel was said to be house trained and rarely has accidents in the house Her activity level was said to be a medium and it was stated that Hazel is shy and fearful of things she is not comfortable with. It was mentioned that Hazel has been crate trained and can spend up to six hours in her crate, and she was also said to be well behaved whether she is left in the home alone or outside in the yard. During the Intake process it was noted that Hazel was friendly and interacted with people she came into contact with. During SAFER Hazel was very social and jumped on the assessor to solicit attention. She maintained a loose body posture for all handling items, and was relaxed during the tag interaction. During the resources portion of the assessment Hazel was easy to handle when engaged with the food, but was not interested in the toys, and only showed minimal interest in the rawhides. Hazel appears to be very social with human handlers, but can become uncomfortable with other dogs, so it is recommended that introductions with other dogs are done slowly. Hazel was also reported to play rough with children, and does not do well with smaller dogs, so the department feels Hazel would do best with an experienced adopter with no young children, and no small dogs. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push her out. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog licks, then turns away. Dog-dog: When of leash with other dogs, Hazel is loose and wiggly when greeting. She is tolerant of brief greetings, but intolerant of lengthy or multiple greeting and will give correction.
