05/02/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/02/15 19:46 BASIC INFO Hazel’s family got her from a pet store 9 years ago and surrendered her due to lack of time. SOCIALIZATION Hazel is friendly/outgoing with strangers. She lived with 4 children ages 0-20 and is relaxed, playful, and tolerant with them. She plays exuberantly with people. She hasn’t bit anyone. She’s friendly with dogs at the dog park. She’s respectful of cats. Her owner trained her to kill rats. BEHAVIOR Hazel has no known behavior issues. She enjoys being brushed and is friendly with strangers that approach her home/family. She doesn’t mind if someone takes her food/treat/toy, moves her off furniture, holds/restrains her, or wakes her up. She doesn’t mind storms. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Hazel’s owner describes her as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, mellow, excitable, and low-medium activity. She rests for most of the day but sometimes follows her family for attention. She plays with ropes and bones. She lived inside and slept on a blanket. She ate dry and wet food and got marrow bones as treats. She’s housetrained and doesn’t have accidents. She paces at the door when she really has to go out. She’s well-behaved when left along. She knows sit. She goes for brisk walks and pulls on her leash. She potties anywhere outside. BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE Hazel had a loose wiggly body, open mouth, and wagging tail during handling-scan (negative), collar, petting, pictures, putting in kennel. She leaned against us while we pet her and took treats from us.
05/06/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hazel really misses her family and it shows, the happy smile and wagging tail noted on her arrival papers are no more and all my camera captures is the serious face and sad eyes of a dog bereft. In her previous life Hazel lived and played nicely with 4 kids of various ages and was described as ‘friendly’, ‘outgoing’ and ‘exuberant’. She loved hanging out with her four-legged pals at the dog park, was always respectful of the cats she met and when asked about any possible behavioral issues she might have, the only box her people ticked was ‘None’. Hazel’s said to be very house trained (amply demonstrated for me!) and will pace at the door to let you know she needs to go ‘potty’ and on leash she walked quite nicely, stopping to sniff every inch of her new surroundings. Once free in a pen she remains quiet and introspective, allowing all my petting (and kissing), laying her head on my lap and showing off her ‘sit’ in return for treats but not interested in chasing a ball or letting loose with a game of tag. Hazel’s world has lost its luster without the people she loves in it but adopt her, take her home and show her some TLC and I’ll bet a big box of kibble this sweet, laid-back girl will be smiling again in no time.
05/06/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Hazel came to our center as an owner surrender stating they no longer had time for her. She walked nicely on her relief walk and did not pull. Hazel allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity. Hazel followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, and approached the assessor at end in a friendly manner. She sniffed assessor’s hand during first Squeeze, and had no response to second Squeeze attempt. Hazel calmly followed the food dish and removed her cheek with a moderate amount of pressure. She had minimal interest in playing with Toy. Hazel took the rawhide away from the assess-a-hand when attempting to take it from her, but did not behave aggressively. She had no interest in helper dog, did not approach and calmly exited. The Behavior Team feels Hazel would do well in an Average home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail down and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in low position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog sniffs hand. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Food 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down. Dog lifts head after a moderate amount of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away. Rawhide 2. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the rawhide, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Dog – dog 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog, or exits.
