07/09/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/09/15 16:08 Victor, Hayes, and Nina were brought to BxAC by the super of a building after their owner moved out and left them behind 1 week ago. The super reports that the dogs are all friendly. Victor appears thin with all of his ribs protruding. He ate food quickly upon arrival. Hayes had a lot of masses all over his body. Nina has a lot of patches of hairloss and red skin. She ate food quickly upon arrival. All three of the dogs had soft bodies, and wagging tails during handling (scan (-), collar, switching leashes, positioning for pictures) and their mouths were usually open. They approached and leaned into us while we pet them. They took treats gently. They allowed us to pick them up and put them in their kennels and didn’t resist.
07/10/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Joining us with his housemates Victor and Nina, Hayes is the old man of the pack, the rock, the wise man, the one who balances the others. He’s likely very housetrained, so grateful for the chance to be outside to go potty and peeing endlessly before we walk to the park. He has a gorgeous walk…a glide….spry, elegant and sexy calling to mind how magnificent he must have been as a youngster. He’s a delight to walk, so easy on the leash. His tail wags at all the dogs we pass, and in the backyard he happily meets everyone through the gate. In group he engages with the females he’s met, and sometimes needs to be corrected for his amorous overtures. Yup – he’s still got that sex appeal. His intake notes state that he was friendly to all during the process, wagging his tail and happy to meet new people. When I sat on the bench to take some notes, Hayes happily created a game of weaving in and around my legs… Gentle, sweet, friendly and a delight, don’t tell Hayes that he’s a “senior” as he’ll deny it all the way! He lifts his head and barks from time to time, maybe responding to sounds only he can hear. He’s an awesome boy who is looking forward to spending his senior years on a soft bed, surrounded by the love of his new family. Can we make that happen for him?
07/12/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Hayes came to our center with two other dogs after being left behind in an apartment. He had a soft body with wagging tail upon intake, allowing all handling, mouth open. He approached admissions counselor and leaned in for petting, taking treats gently from counselor’s hand. Hayes was very loose, wiggly, and playful in the SAFER assessment room. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft, tail wag. Hayes stood still and accepted touch for Sensitivity item, tail wagging, body soft, mouth closed. He jumped and played during Tag game, chewing leash slightly during play, but released it easily and settled at end of game. He did not pull his paw back, tail wag, during both Squeeze attempts. Hayes lifted his head out of the Food bowl when assess-a-hand was applied to his cheek. He was playful with Toy, soft ‘popping’ his body, keeping a firm grip with a loose, wiggly body and wagging tail. He was playful with Rawhide, hopping and popping, but relinquished it easily. The Behavior Team feels Hayes would do well in an Average home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps up once play begins. Squeeze 1/ 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, tail wag. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 1. Dog plays with chew, will relinquish rawhide to you. Dog-to-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Hayes is sexually motivated but will take correction.
