08/15/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Harmonica’s best friend passed away and there was no one to take care of her except us. She smiles and wags her tail as she looks around for her person trying to figure out what happened to turn her life upside down. So happy to be out for a walk as she needed to go potty so badly, I can almost hear her sigh with relief. Her leash manners are good; she pulls a bit from time to time but she’s responsive to me as we walk and chat. Wagging her tail as we go she greets other dogs of all sizes with an appropriate doggie how do you do. Sleek and compact her coat shines, and she loves treats taking them gently. Off leash in the pen she explores, comes to me when I call her for a quick kiss and a cuddle. The person who brought her in said she’s friendly to everyone and it’s easy to see how sweet she is, being brave through her confusion and friendly to everyone who wants to meet her. She’s tiny and will fit into any living situation and is hoping to find a new person to love. “All you need is love…”
08/16/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Harmonica was brought to our shelter by a family member of the owner who passed away. Family member states Harmonica is friendly with everyone. During intake, Harmonica was very tense while having her picture taken. Harmonica was anxious and panting, pulling slightly during her relief walk. She panted and paced throughout SAFER assessment. Harmonica allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft, tail wagging. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, ears back, tail neutral, panting. She was distracted and unresponsive to touch at each pass during Tag game. Harmonica did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, tail wagging. She gulped her food as assess-a-hand approached and would not lift her head out of the Food bowl. Harmonica engaged briefly with Toy, but interest was minimal as she became easily distracted. She took Rawhide away with a low, neutral body, no growling or stiffness. Due to Harmonica’s potential for possessiveness with Food and Rawhide, the Behavior Team feels she would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. Any older children should have an in-depth interaction before considering adoption. Harmonica may also benefit from learning the command ‘drop it’ as well as trade up games. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture, panting. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, tail wag. Food 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body a bit stiff. She does not lift head when hand is applied to cheek. Toy 1. Minimal interest, engages briefly, easily distracted. Rawhide 2. Dog takes rawhide away, body low, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the rawhide, and she is neutral. No growling or stiffness.
