A volunteer writes: We’ve all heard the expression ‘office wife’…..and now a new one…’shelter daughter’. That’s how a staff member referred to Harley….as his ‘shelter daughter’. That’s how much he likes her, and after spending time with her I can see why. Harley sits quietly at the front of her kennel, shy, timid but hoping to make a new friend. Easy to leash she steps gently out and we head outside. She goes potty right away so is likely housetrained, but is obviously nervous keeping her tail tucked. Harley is too thin so she’s being fed an extra meal daily to help her gain some weight. Off leash in the pen she explores quietly and then hops up on the bench to sit beside me! Such a major step for her. She then accepts a treat which she was too nervous to accept before, and then gives me a gentle kiss. Wagging her tail gently now, it’s clear that she trusts me and comes partially onto my lap. Harley Quinn is cutely named for the publishing company Harlequin, famous for their romance novels. Our Harley Quinn is ready to begin her own romance…with you. She’s made amazing progress in a short amount of time….lots of baby steps building trust, learning about friendship, showing affection. She’s ready to take some giant steps with a person or family who understands her need to take things slow. The rewards are endless and her love will be unconditional. Will you be the lucky person to offer her a home and watch her grow?
12/15/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Harley Quinn walks with a low fearful body language on leash. She was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Harley Quinn was shy during handling with a fearful body language. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Harley Quinn was not interested in toys. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter. Harley Quinn is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Rascal is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1. No interest. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Harley Quinn is nervous upon entering the interaction area. She is intially avoidant of greeting from the helper dog, then eventually allows him to approach and sniff.
12/13/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Harley Quinn is nervous upon entering the interaction area. She is intially avoidant of greeting from the helper dog, then eventually allows him to approach and sniff. Harley Quinn has been nervous while in the care center and would need time to acclimate to her new home. Due to this, the behavior department recommends that Harley Quinn does not go to a home with other dogs.
