Look deep, deep into my eyes…Harley Quinn could charm anyone with her gorgeous dual-colored gaze and it’s just so easy to fall under the mesmerizing spell of this laid back older gal. Before they were evicted Harley was a shining star in the life of her former owner; wonderfully gentle with energetic child visitors (ages 1-8), bilingual in English and Spanish and respectful of her parrot siblings. We’re told she knows commands for sit, down, give five, stay, go outside and go to sleep – this is one inteligente perro! Harley’s a great leash walker and takes stairs with ease but the many extra pounds she carries are literally weighing her down and we keep to a slow, steady trot as she sniffs about, takes care of all her ‘business’ and greets fellow dogs with friendly good manners. When we return from our walk and a medical staffer grins and calls out ‘I love her!’, it’s not hard to see why. A true gentle giant, Harley takes treats softly, accepts all handling just fine and absolutely aced her behavior assessment too. She’s ready and waiting to be your perfect family pet so look deep, deep into her eyes…and say yes to Harley Quinn!

PROFILE:
NAME: Harley Quinn
REASON FOR SURRENDER: Owner recently lost home and has nowhere to keep Harley Quinn.
RELATIONSHIP: Harley Quinn’s previous owner found her as a stray about 8 years ago. She is currently about 8.5 years old. She scanned negative for a microchip.
PEOPLE: She lived in a home with 1 adult. She has interacted with children ages 1-8 and she was relaxed, playful, and very tolerant. Owner stated that children would often sit on her and pull her ears and tail and that she would show no signs of aggression. She isn’t bothered by strangers who approach her house or her family. She has never bitten anyone.
OTHER ANIMALS: She has lived with parrots and owner stated that she was very respectful and didn’t bother them. She has interacted with other dogs and owner stated that she is usually relaxed and when she plays with them, she is usually gentle. She has not bitten another animal.
PERSONALITY: She is a mostly indoor dog who is not very active. She has been described as playful, affectionate, mellow, confident, sometimes excitable, independent, and friendly. She enjoys going for short, slow walks on leash about twice daily. She doesn’t play much anymore, but she does enjoys playing with chew bones. She isn’t bothered if you touch her food while she is eating, if you take a toy away, during baths, if you have to hold or restrain her, during storms or fireworks, or if you disturb her while she is sleeping. She is afraid during nail trimmings. She is friendly if you take a treat away, during baths, and if you brush her. She likes to follow her owner around when home. She has eaten Blue Buffalo and Pedigree wet and dry food. Her favorite treats are Milk Bones. She prefers to relieve herself on the cement. She usually sleeps on her bed.
TRAINING: She knows sit, down, give five, stay, go outside (she will wait by the door for walks), and go to sleep (she will go to her bed). She is house-trained and rarely has accidents. She is also piddle pad trained. She is well-behaved when left alone in the house and in the yard.
BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE: She was very calm during the intake. She had a soft body and soft eyes, and she allowed petting and handling and showed no signs of aggression. She responded very well to treats, and she seemed to know commands in both Spanish and English.
BEHAVIOR:
Harley Quinn arrived at our shelter on 4/18/2015 because her owner lost his residence. She was extremely calm during intake. It is reported she knows commands in Spanish and English. It is also reported she has interacted with children ages 1-8 and is very tolerant, even if they would sit on her or pull her ears and tail. Harley Quinn also lived with parrots and was very respectful of them. Harley Quinn walked perfectly on her relief walk. During the SAFER assessment, she was calm and agreeable. She held gaze for three full seconds during LOOK item. She stood still and accepted all tactile portions of the assessment with no aggressive behaviors. During Food item she was very interested in eating and needed a lot of pressure to move her head out of the bowl, but not aggressively. She was just very focused on eating and is 110 lbs so it was difficult to move her head out. She had no interest in the toys at all. Harley Quinn took the rawhide and turned away from the assessor, putting her body between the assessor and the rawhide. She walked in calmly during dog=to-dog interaction. The Behavior Team feels Harley Quinn would do well in an Average home that understands she is not very active due to her age and weight. Adjusting how much she eats and short daily walks might help her to lose weight and give her some extra energy.
Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog sniffs hand.
Food 2. Dog follows the dish, lifts head after a moderate amount of pressure from hand to cheek.
Toy 1. No interest.
Rawhide 2. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the rawhide, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches helper dog with loose body, ears relaxed, and lip neutral
