BEHAVIOR:
Handsome appears to be a high-energy, active dog. During a stay in a home environment, Handsome was found to growl and sometimes nip at the children in the home (aged 5 and 8). We have no details about the relationship between dog and children, or about the motivation behind the behavior. No other behavioral concerns were reported. We suggest that Handsome may be anxious around children and may be happiest in an active adult-only home.
3/11 SAFER:
Handsome pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Handsome did a lot of jumping up and body checking while playing tag. Handsome did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He took the toy and the rawhide with a soft body language. Handsome was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful.
Handsome is an active dog he need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter.

Well helloooo Handsome! Dogs just don’t come any cuter or full of fun than Handsome and if we could harness the spirit of this young hunk the world’s energy crisis would be solved tomorrow! He’s such a contradiction; super enthusiastic about everything and constantly on the move yet so well-trained he knows commands for sit, stay, wait, come and even how to shake paw like a gentleman. It seems Handsome has never seen a dog he wasn’t excited to meet or a squirrel he wasn’t thrilled to chase and taking him out for a walk is a great way to tone up your arms for the summer fashion season as he pulls strongly in a way that suggests no one ever taught him things should be otherwise. He seems quite house trained, stops on request, takes reward treats gently from my fingers and is generally so eager to please his human that any additional training his new parents invest in will be well worthwhile. Naturally, Handsome loves to play ball and as he never guards his things it’s an easy and enjoyable way to burn off some of that extra energy, that is, until another dog enters the yard! Suddenly the ball is forgotten and Handsome zooms to the gate to play bow and frantically wag his tail as he vocalizes a great big HELLO to his new friend, following them along the fence line then climbing his front paws up the wall as they pass out of sight. A big galoot who needs a family as active and full of life as he is, Handsome will make the best workout buddy and a wonderful playmate. He’s already neutered and ready to leave immediately so come on in, ask for Handsome and take your first step on the adventure of a lifetime!

02/19/15 17:31 Handsome (name given to him by finder) was found running loose on public property. The finder had him for a few weeks in hopes of finding his owner. He states that on walks Handsome pulls to greet every human and dog and whines when he can’t. Handsome also plays with humans of all ages. He’ll have accidents which is ususally due to being left alone for long periods of time (8+ hours). The finder says he does not guard his food bowl while eating from it, treats/rawhides, or toys. He knows sit and shake. He has destroyed pillows when left alone. He loves going outside for brisk walks and runs. Handsome is chipped and was found with a rabies tag license, microchip, and lock on his red collar.

02/28/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Handsome came to us as a stray on 2/19/15 as a stray. The finder of Handsome housed him for a few weeks and reported that Handsome loves to pull and greet every dog and human he can. He also stated that Handsome loves to go on brisk walks or runs. It was observed in the shelter that Handsome appears to be very high energy dog, and should go to a home that can provide him with long brisk walks to help manage his energy. Handsome allowed the assessor complete all tactile items of the assessment without displaying any signs of aggression. He was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. He only displayed minimal interest in the toy or rawhide items, and rushed in quickly toward the helper dog but showed no aggression. Helper: 1028831 Look: 2. Dog jumps on the Assessor consistently, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body a bit tense, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 1.
