06/08/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
This dog was picked up along with Elly. He was growling a little bit out of caution when we entered the house but I was able to talk to him through the process of him backing up, sniffing the leash and eventually being leashed. Once he was leashed, he was easy to handle, walks well on leash and allowed me to pick him up and put in the van.
06/18/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hammerhead and Elly were abandoned in a vacant apartment without food and water for over one week. It took quite a toll on both of them, physically for Elly and psychologically for Hammerhead. It is no wonder that he was so frantic when he arrived at the care center, barking a storm and growling at anything and anyone that moved. By now, Hammerhead has very much calmed down and is so much less anxious. He is quite ready to go out and waits right behind his kennel door. He has remained wary, though, but much more open to caresses, and even accepts treats. He comes when I call him and settles under my legs or by my side, alert and still ready to run if he feels uncomfortable. He immediately goes and checks any human or pooch coming to our gate, but he does not bark anymore. Hammerhead is a beautiful medium-sized dog dressed in an impeccable chocolate coat. He reminds me of a horse chestnut, all shiny and warm deep brown. He is making progress here at the care center, and I hope that soon enough he will be ready to meet potential adopters and have a loving home, and a family who cares. Hammerhead is at the Manhattan Care Center, wishing upon a star. Another volunteer writes: Hammerhead has come a long way, and although he is still some miles away from reaching his and our goals, I am pretty proud of him. Playgroups with other dogs seem to have helped him a lot. He now mingles and plays. I heard that he used to live with many dogs beside Elly, the lovely girl he was found with. This new activity we have at the care center might be a happy reminder of his past life. He is still a little hand shy and wary around people. I think that the human factor might have been the “bad” one in Hammerhead’s past and somehow, he needs to reconnect with our kind and feel good about us. I so hope that experienced and loving hands will come along, foster his trust and bring warmth and peace to his heart.
06/11/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Hammerhead is very fearful and takes a few minutes to coax to the front of his kennel but allows the handler to lift him out. He was very nervous during the assessment but would approach the assessor when coaxed and allowed all handling to be conducted with no aggression. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He had no interest in toys or rawhide. Hammerhead was brought to the care center as a stray; upon intake he was very cautious and growled but after a few minutes allowed the officer to leash him and pick him up into a kennel. Hammerhead was tense and nervous throughout the assessment, but allowed the assessor to complete the assessment without aggression and would approach on his own when coaxed. The Behavior Department believes Hammerhead would do best with an experienced adopter, with no young children that is able to provide positive experiences for Hammerhead. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Hammerhead be given the opportunity to interact at their own pace. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. 06/11/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Hammerhead greets the helper dog politely and may re-engage and sniff briefly but mostly just wanders the yard. 6/12 Update Hammerhead continues to be more interested in exploring his surroundings, a little nervous at handler interaction but once he sniffs seems more comfortable. Could be more playful with a more energetic playmate. 6/13 Hammerhead is tolerant and greets appropriately but is more interested in wandering the yard sniffing. 6/15 update: Hammerhead solicits play and eventually engages in running play with another male. 6/16 update: Hammerhead engages in running play and is vocal while playing. 6/17 update: Hammerhead is social and playful, engaging in running play with both males and females. 6/18 update: Hammerhead is social and playful. He is respectful of dogs who are not interested and tolerant with dogs who are pushy. He is a social group greeter dog. 6/21 update: Hammerhead allows greeting and will correct any solicitations.
