Hello, my name is Gus and before we go any further I have a very important question that I need you to answer…Do you like hugs? Oh yay, me too! And how do you feel about kisses? You love ’em? Well that’s great, because I like to share those as well! I’ve been told I’m the handsomest dog ever and I don’t know if that’s true, but I’m certainly one of the happiest and this ear-to-ear smile? With so many things in the world to love, I can’t seem to stop myself from beaming! For starters, there’s spending time with my human friends, roughhousing with the other dogs, learning commands (and the treat reward that follows of course), playing with a ball, chewing on a toy, walking through the park….the list goes on and on. When I first came to the Care Center I had some boo boos from a tussle with a not-so-friendly dog but every day since then I’ve been healing and getting healthier and now you’d never even know I’d been hurt, everything is in great working order! I must be good at test-taking too because they tell me I got almost perfect ‘scores’ on my behavior assessment and with a little extra leash training I’m going to be an almost perfect pet. Sometimes I can be pretty talkative, like if you’re making me sit still through a looong photo shoot or when I see another dog through the fence. I do like other pups but I’m told my enthusiasm can be a bit much for some of them so slow intros with no barrier would be best for any meet-n-greet with a new four-legged brother or sister. Anyway, enough about me. How about making a visit to the Manhattan Care Center so I can get to know (and hug and kiss) you too? We’re going to be best friends, I just know it!

PROFILE
Dog was brought in by Police because it was in a fight with other dog it lived with. Very scared during intake. Would not come out of crate right away. Dog reacts to other dogs growls and lunges. Bit and got bit by other dog.
BEHAVIOR
Gus came into our center as an owner surrender after getting into a fight with another dog he lived with, both biting and getting bit. He was very scared during intake, would not come out of crate. Owner reports Gus is good with people and young children. It is reported he is crate trained and housebroken. Gus pulled moderately on leash for his relief walk. Gus jumped up on assessor in between several of the tactile portions of the assessment, but got down and settled easily. Gus held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, tail wag. He leaned away from assessor during Sensitivity item, body soft, tail wag. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, jumping up at end of game. Gus did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. He kept a firm grip on Toy, loose body. He approached the helper dog a bit quickly, tail at spine level, body not stiff, barking. The Behavior Team feels Gus would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from obedience classes in regards to leash manners and jumping up.
Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog leans away from assessor, body soft, tail wag, jumps up at end.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, jumps on assessor at end.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed , jumps up at end.
Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog a bit quickly with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, barking.
