A volunteer writes: From Gucci’s intake info by staff: “Gucci was very excited, has a loose body and wagging tail. He allowed petting and loved the attention.” Fast forward and now Gucci realizes he’s been left in a strange place full of people he doesn’t know, sounds he doesn’t recognize, and smells that don’t make sense. He’s scared and defensive and is, when I first met him, reluctant to be touched. He came forward in his kennel when I opened his door and allowed me to leash him. Once outside he goes potty immediately confirming that he’s housetrained as we’ve been told. His leash manners are good as we walk to the park. We’re told that he loves children and plays well with them, loves to play with ropes and play tug, loves baths as its playtime, knows ‘sit’ and ‘stay’, and is friendly and outgoing to strangers. Off leash in a pen Gucci follows me around, touches my hand with his nose from time to time, doesn’t want my treats and comes when I call him. In group play he greeted other dogs, is tolerant but did not engage, and when on our walk a small snarly dog lunged at him he ignored him. Good boy Gucci! Gucci’s houndy ears, ice blue eyes and compact body speak to many breeds in his mix and the results are stunning. He needs to feel safe again in order to allow himself to love at his own pace in his own time. Are you the person that will help him get there?
