06/19/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Grant was difficult to remove from his kennel showing teeth and lunges at the rope. Once he was out he walks with a fearful body language. He was stiff and did not show social behavior during the assessment. He was uncomfortable with handling; he makes direct eye contact and wrinkles his muzzle to expose his front teeth with a low growl. We decided to skip the handling part of the assessment for safety reasons. During the resources Grant was not interested in food, toys or rawhide. Grant does not approach other dog, attempts to exit. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 5. Dog freezes and snap Food: No interest. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog, or exits. A volunteer writes: OK I was warned. He’s grumpy. He doesn’t like to be picked up. He’s always baring his teeth. He’s really fat. All true. But man, is he ever cute. A big misshapen meatball with a button face and some tiny little pearly whites that he loves to show off. I will tell you that, for an overweight gent, Grant moves like lightening when he feels threatened. And his interpretation of “threatening” is expansive. He snapped at the hand of a fellow volunteer as she graciously offered him a snack. And if you thought he was going after the snack, you would be wrong. He was going after her extended hand. Grant does not like the direct approach. We became friends after I sat around ignoring him and he finally decided to use me as a step stool to try and wiggle his way onto a nearby bench. He never made it to the bench, but plopped instead right into my lap. Once Grant landed, I was able to touch him, then pet him lightly on the head, then stroke his beefy back, then tickle his bodacious butt, and then we were friends. Or, as friendly as Grant would allow at the moment. When my fellow volunteer approached this time with a camera, Grant snarled rather than snapped. He is grumpy for sure, but it’s grumpiness born of discomfort and confusion. It seems as though Grant has spent little time on leash or outdoors. A complete couch potato I’m betting. Grant probably led a very sheltered life, rich in home cooked meals but poor in every other regard, not properly socialized or exposed to much. He is certainly not polite and will be the first one to show you outright that he does not want to be bothered. After some time spent in one another’s company, Grant was soliciting contact and enjoying the attention. He’d nudge me a little, look softly into my eyes, then take off to pace and run/wobble around the backyard pen. He did eliminate when we got outside and seemed to enjoy the company of other dogs. In fact, the only time I saw him actually use his tongue in an affectionate way was when he was attempting to kiss a larger dog through the fence! Likes dogs better than people? I can relate. He allowed me to lift him back into his cage but, true to form, as soon as the door closed and I was saying my goodbyes, his last gesture was a lip lift and a glimmer of those pearly whites. Grant is comical but also means business. He has the potential to be a loving companion but only for someone who truly understands that he needs to be approached on his own terms, in his own time. And he has to get some exercise… I mean, really. If you love the feisty ones, you’ll love Grant! I do!
