VOLUNTEER WROTE: As I was about to leave the shelter one day, two volunteers said, “You’ve got to photograph Gordon. He’s the greatest!” “How is he the greatest?” I asked. They told me how he walks nicely on a leash, and once they arrived at the park with Gordon, he hopped up on the bench beside them to snuggle and give kisses. And so far, they said, he basically has ignored other dogs. Gordon is a 1-1/2 year old Shiba Inu mix who arrived here as a stray on 7/28/09. He weighs 43 pounds. And he is absolutely gorgeous.
09/26/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Magic previously lived with 1 adult and has been socialized with children and dogs. The owner mentioned When Magic is around children he is relaxed, respectful and tolerant but when interacting with children he is playful and somewhat rough due to his size. The owner stated Magic is house trained and has a medium activity level. The owner describes Magic as playful, pushy, excitable, affectionate, mellow, independent and friendly. It was reported by the owner Magic will growl if anyone put their hands next to his food and he will also give a growl when bring restrained. At intake it was reported Magic was calm and relaxed when the owner was present, when the owner left Magic became nervous and did not want to walk on the leash, some handling was conducted at this time. During SAFER Magic came into the assessment room nervous and tense, not all handling items were able to be conducted as Magic tried to bite the assessor when attempting to put the leash on him. He displayed no interest in any of the resource items during this portion of the assessment. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time. Food: 1. No interest. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Magic is uncomfortable and will bare teeth and growl when the helper dog approaches him. He will run away from interaction.
