DOG INFORMATION SHEET Does this dog have a microchip? Yes Animal’s Name: Gloria (A1045069) WHY ARE YOU BRINGING THIS DOG IN? Stray / other Describe his behavior: When I first approached Gloria, she came right up to me (wagging tail, calm / happy face) started to lick my hands, allowed unlimited petting. Gloria is truely a sweetheart. Gloria appears to like to play fetch, she was picking up random objects and bringing them to me to throw. Gloria appears to walk very clam on a leash, she will walk beside you and at times allow you to lead her. Gloria was an indoor / outdoor stray dog for 4-5 years, living inside of an empty home. I would say Gloria does very well with strangers.
07/31/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I fell in love with Gloria before I even met her — she is so magical she could be the subject of a children’s book! According to the people that reported her as a stray, she had been living in an abandoned building in Canarsie for several years! Of course, she had a little help from friends — people in the neighborhood kept her fed (well! she is a portly little lady). I can just imagine her making her rounds down the block, and the plates of leftovers people would bring her on holidays. The part of her story that’s begging to be illustrated involves Gloria and her dog house. She apparently had a little igloo in the yard. On nice days she could be seen taking her blanket out of it, spreading it out in the sun, and then bringing it back in to tuck herself in at night! Given her former lifestyle, it’s no wonder little Gloria is a little unsure of the people and dogs that surround her now. She’s no problem to take out of her cage and very easy to handle, but seems a little nervous. She walks very nicely on leash, keeps her cage clean, and is quick to relieve herself outside. Gloria is starting to warm up nicely. She looks up at me often and softly wags her tail. She loves treats and though I wouldn’t call her cuddly yet, she lets me pet her all over. I hope her survivor’s tale ends with a description of Gloria bringing her blanket outside for a family picnic, and in again to curl up on a nice plushy bed! Please come meet this special little lady at Brooklyn ACC — maybe you’ll be the one to make a special appearance in How Gloria Found Her Person!
07/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Gloria came into the care center as a stray, so we do not have any information on her past behaviors in a home. At intake it was noted that Gloria was very social allowing all handling by a counselor, and also appeared to enjoy playing fetch. During SAFER Gloria maintained a relaxed body posture when interacting with the assessor, but was not very attention seeking. She allowed the assessor to conduct all handling items without issue, and was relaxed during the tag interaction. During the resources portion of the assessment Gloria was not interested in the food or toy items, and when engaged with the rawhide, her body was loose when the assessor attempted to remove the item, but she did not relinquish the rawhide. When off leash with other dogs, it was noted that Gloria appears to only be tolerant of a brief greeting, but becomes defensive when sniffed for too long. The department recommends an experienced adopter, with no other dogs. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food: Inconclusive, dog is not eating. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the rawhide, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Gloria allows a brief greeting but becomes defensive when the other dog continues to sniff her; she will offer a lip curl and may snap if the dog does not walk away.
07/28/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Gloria is easily overwhelmed by a playful dog. She becomes defensive and yelps and snaps when approached by the other dog. She may do better with a calmer dog. 7/29 update: Gloria allows a brief greeting but becomes defensive when the other dog continues to sniff her; she will offer a lip curl and may snap if the dog does not walk away.
