09/08/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Ghost is doing everything he can to live up to his name. He has a blanket draped over his cage — an attempt to make him feel more secure. Peering behind it usually reveals a big Eeyore of a dog, curled up on his bed, his trembling back leg foiling his attempt to play possum. Walking him sometimes feels like driving a shopping cart with a bum wheel; sometimes he walks with me effortlessly, but others he resists any change of direction unless it leads towards “away.” In the yard we fare much better. He paces around, but will approach me. He lets me pet him all over; his coat is rough like sandpaper. It doesn’t look like the years have been kind to him; he has a big chunk missing from one ear and sometimes seems weak in his legs. His cage is always clean and he relieves himself outside. He calmly greets an old lady boxer in the pen next to us, but walks away when her person compliments him. He lies down and faces away from us, head flat on the ground. Still, he lets me pet him, clean his eyes, and even makes fleeting soft eye contact. When it’s time to go in he gets up when I call him over. I put the treats he wouldn’t take from me outside near his bed, and see later that he gobbled them up. After spending more time with him, it seems Ghost is accepting that we both know he isn’t invisible. He’ll take treats softly from my hand and when I approach him when he is laying down he acknowledges me — raises his front paw and reveals his belly. He is elusive like a ghost, and sometimes strives to be invisible like one, but he doesn’t embody any of the scary connotations of a ghost; despite being very out of his element, his company has never made me feel uneasy. It’s hard not to think of him as very sweet and hope soon he will find a home and feel secure enough to reveal his true spirit.
09/05/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Ghost came in as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake Ghost was docile and relaxed, he allowed all handling. During SAFER Ghost came into the assessment room nervous and trembling, he was not interested with the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Ghost was fearful and unresponsive during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Ghost was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Ghost is nervous and trembling throughout the assessment and has a crouched body posture. The behavior department advises that future adopters should be able to provide positive experiences for Ghost. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Ghost be given the opportunity to interact at his own pace. So the behavior department feels he can be suitable for an experience adopter with no children. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, and lip licks. Tag: 2.
