A volunteer writes: Sweet, shy and gorgeous…that’s our Geronimo. A puppy who hasn’t had much experience in the big wide world, he’s learning how to make friends and doing it perfectly! Surrendered with his littermate Buster, we’re told he’s relaxed and playful with children as well as other dogs, is mostly housetrained and needs regular walks to enforce his skills, has a medium activity level, is crate trained and slept there at night, and liked to “play fight” with the other dogs in the home. Geronimo is a gorgeous dog, his coat as soft as the finest velvet, and although shy is friendly and loving, happy to be pet and spoken with. As other dogs entered the adjoining pen Geronimo greeted all with a wagging tail, and in group play after some initial shyness engages in brief bouts of play with others. Like his brother Buster, it’s clear that Geronimo hasn’t had much socialization and all things considered is doing fabulously! He’s clearly ready to face the world head on, make new friends both human and canine and get on with his life. Are you the patient and experienced person who helps him on his way? He’s awesome and ready to meet you!
PROFILE :
Basic Information:
Geronimo is an 8 month old male Labrador retriever mixed with Pitt Bull. He was bred at home but was surrendered because he and his siblings became too much for his previous owner to handle. He has never been to a vet but has no known injuries or health problems. The two things his previous owner liked most about him were; he’s protective and sweet.
Social Life and Personality:
Around 8 year old children Geronimo is relaxed and playful and when he plays he is exuberant. Around other dogs he is also relaxed and playful and when he plays he is very rough. Geronimo has never been around cats. He is mostly house-trained but has accidents daily. He was kept indoors only and has a medium activity level. He is described
as playful, excitable, affectionate, shy and friendly.
Behavior:
Geronimo has never bitten a person but has bitten an animal. The last time he bit an animal was 2 months ago. If his previous owner was to touch his food bowl while eating Buster was friendly but he would move away from the bowl. He was playful if a treat or toy was taken away from him while eating or playing. He wasn’t bothered if he was taken
off the furniture. When it came to bath time Geronimo was afraid, he would struggle to get away. He was friendly if his paws were touched, if his coat was brushed or if he was held or restrained. If an unfamiliar person approached his previous home he would bark but was friendly. He wasn’t bothered if he was disturbed while sleeping.
For a New Family to Know:
Geronimo knows sit. For exercise he went on brisk walks once a week. He was not given toys. His crate was metal with a plastic bottom and he would be in his cage 8-10 hours a day. When his previous owner walk home he liked to follow him around but when left alone in a room with 4 other dogs they would play fight and sometimes it got too rough. He
isn’t bothered by storms or fireworks. He ate dry Pedigree and at night he slept in his kennel.
Behavior during intake:
Geranimo was very timid, crouched stiff body, yawning, licking lips, hid under chair, his body was shaking. He allowed staff to collar, pet and took treat gently. When walking on leash he would sit, shake his head and not move unless he was coaxed to. He went up to other staff, sniffed and let them pet him but when an ACO walk towards him very fast he sat up, and growled.
BEHAVIOR:
Geronimo came to us as an owner surrender on 12/22/15. It was reported by the owner that Geronimo has lived with children before and is said to be relaxed and playful around them. The owner stated that Geronimo has also lived with another dog before, and is relaxed and playful around them but can be very rough in play style. In addition, Geronimo
was said to have bitten another dog before about two months ago though we do not have any information as to why this happened or how it happened. Geronimo was very nervous when entering the behavior room and can visibly be seen trembling. Even though fearful Geronimo was very interested in interacting with the assessor and had soft body language. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items maintaining fearful body language, but was always soft to the touch. He showed no interest in the toy on this portion of the assessment. The behavior department believes that due to Geronimo’s fearful nature he should go to an experienced owner that will give him time to acclimate to his environment. In addition, interactions with Geronimo should be conducted slowly and he given the option to initiate interaction.
Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is tucked with fearful body language, but is soft to the touch. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body trembling and a bit fearful but soft to the touch, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, low and a bit fearful.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back.
Toy 1: No interest.
Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Geronimo is fearful in yard, but offers brief sniff and shows increasing interest.
Group Behavior:
When off leash with other dogs, Geronimo is fearful in yard, but offers brief sniff and shows increasing interest.
12/24: Geronimo engages in bouts of play with other dogs. He attempts to mount after play ceases.
