08/29/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A gorgeous gemstone, Garnet is the birthstone for January, but our Garnet will make her birthday the day she gets adopted…..and a Garnet will be known from that time forward as of that date. She has absolutely the sweetest, softest face, and her round shape attests to a lifetime of litters. As we walk everyone looks down at her with a smile, as her tail wags, her sweetness shines through loud and clear, and her leash manners leave no doubt that she’s accustomed to leash walking. She shows off her housetraining skills the moment we were out the door and looks up at me waiting for her “good girl” as she goes. A ‘good girl’ treat follows of course! She ignores other dogs we pass on our walk, and in group she’s tolerant, uncomfortable with prolonged interaction and doesn’t like to be sniffed. Her coat is thick and lush, her eyes friendly and warm, and she poses for pictures like a pro, sitting for a treat when asked to. Quiet, easy and gentle, she’s the sometimes overlooked little girl because she is just that – quiet and easy. But, she’s the one who is steadfast and can be counted on to always be there for you. Isn’t that what it’s all about? Garnet is ready to be your best friend forever and ever. No more puppies, she’s the one that wants to be cared for moving forward. Come meet her today.
08/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Garnet was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body and tail, but trying to stay close. She was calm and relaxed during handling; flank was used during the squeeze portion of the assessment due to medical reasons. She was calm and relaxed when playing tag with assessor. Garnet was stiff and cannot be pushed out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. She was easy to handle when chewing on a toy and had no interest in rawhide. Garnet was brought to the care center as a stray; upon intake, Garnet approached the admissions counselor without fear and allowed all handling and petting without issue. Throughout the assessment, Garnet remained very calm and tried to stay close to the assessor. She showed a slight potential to become possessive over her food, the Behavior Department recommends that due to this potential Garnet would do best in an experienced home that feels comfortable monitoring and safely managing any possessive behaviors if they manifest in a home environment. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, neutral body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft Flank squeeze1: 1. Dog sits, mouth open or lip long. Flank squeeze2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Food 3. Dog follows the dish, her tail between her legs, ears are forward. Her body is stiff. Dog does not lift her head from the bowl when hand is applied to her cheek. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Garnet greets politely, but is uncomfortable with prolonged interaction. She growls when approached and sniffed by a male dog.
