07/17/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/17/15 18:52 BASIC INFO Garlic and Ginger are brother and sister. They have spent their lives (5 years) tethered at a warehouse to keep intruders away. The warehouse is closing and their owners no longer need them anymore. Garlic has a very large lump on the left side of his forehead and his left eye is red, cloudy, and mucousy. We were told that he was hit by a truck at the warehouse. Ginger has large scars around her rear left limb. We were told that this was caused by rope burn. The dogs have small black wounds around their heads and ears and we were told that they were often bit by flies. SOCIALIZATION Garlic and Ginger were around adults and are friendly with strangers including delivery people. They’ve never bit, lunged, or tried to hurt anyone. They’re relaxed, affectionate, and playful with each other and the female dog who used to live at the nearby warehouse. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Garlic and Ginger’s caretakers describe them as very friendly, outgoing, affectionate, and happy. They were sometimes brought inside the warehouse and were trained to only go potty outside. They know sit, down, roll over, and go home. They haven’t spent any time inside of a home. INTAKE Garlic and Ginger both had very soft, relaxed bodies, wagging tails, and open mouths during handling-scan (-), collar, switching leashes, petting, and positioning for pictures. They often rolled over onto their backs and wagged their tails while we pet their tummies. They took treats very gently. Garlic went mostly into his kennel when asked and allowed us to lift him to give him a boost from behind. Ginger went right into her kennel when asked.
07/27/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: 5 year old Garlic and sister Ginger joined us as their owners lost their property. They were mostly outdoor pets although quite unlikely good watch dogs as they seem to like everybody around, people and dogs alike, including each other…. Their former masters have only good things to say about them. Garlic lost an eye to a car accident that also caused him to have a giant bump on the left side of his forehead. Injury helping, Garlic is a bit unusual looking and might have some American Bulldog up his ancestry. He is bulky, so mushy and his shoulders are square. Garlic is eager to come out of his kennel. Of course…. he spent his life outside….He is very slow moving and panting. The heat is bothering him..Me too…He loves treats(he is a little chunky) and to rest. Long walks are not his cup of tea. He likes other dogs, pulling toward them, sniffing them through the gate, wagging his tail happily. A good encounter does not necessarily need a bouquet of flowers. Garlic could be a matcho man but I doubt he would be a match in an argument. He is too soft a dog, a placid pooch who goes with the flow. Garlic is a sweet and friendly guy who did not have the most pampered life. Still, he ended up being a good and sociable dog who likes to be petted, rolls on his back for belly rub and enjoys the company of his kind. It is time for Garlic to retire….I bet he would love a soft pillow, healthy while gourmet dog food and the inconditional love of a master who will make him feel like a King…Garlic is at the Manhattan Care Center, wishing upon a star.
07/23/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Garlic came to our center along with his sister as an owner surrender. It is reported Garlic was used as a guard dog for the owner’s warehouse and has never been inside of a house, only tethered outside the warehouse to keep intruders away. Owner also reports Garlic was hit by one of the warehouse trucks which caused some injuries to his head and eye. It is also reported Garlic has been around adults and was friendly with strangers including delivery people. The two dogs that were tethered together were relaxed, affectionate and playful with each other as well as a dog that lived at a nearby warehouse. During intake, Garlic was friendly and relaxed, rolling over on his back for belly rubs. He took treats very gently. He went into the kennel himself when asked. Garlic allowed his head to be held in assessor’s hands, lip lick, body soft. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, mouth closed, ears and tail neutral. Garlic was unresponsive to the assessor during Tag game, body soft. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Garlic lifted his head and ceased eating during Food item. He had minimal interest in Toy and Rawhide, showing brief interest while wagging his tail, but then turning away. The Behavior Team feels Garlic would do well in an Average home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is neutral, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is neutral, body soft, mouth closed, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push him out. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away. Dog-dog: 2.
