A volunteer writes: Possibly named after a superhero from the comics, Gambit “has the mutant ability to tap into the potential energy contained within an object and transform it into kinetic energy upon touching it”. Well, OK, that might describe our Gambit. He’s all about being a puppy – playful, energetic, jumpy, a bit mouthy in play, loves chasing a ball and brings it back letting me take it out of his mouth, or deciding he’ll bat it around himself for a while. He’s a stunning puppy in clean and well groomed slate gray coat – his tail wags, he smiles, he bounces! He may be housetrained as he went potty as soon as we were out the door, but may need some reinforcement once in a new home. He is a puppy after all! His leash manners are good, his tail wags as we walk, and his eyes sparkle all the time with the wonderment that is so uniquely puppy. If you’re all about puppies and can provide the structure and positive reinforcement training Gambit needs, he’s hoping to meet you soon. He’s ready to light up your life with love; and just needs the right structure to provide it appropriately. Meet our little bundle of kinetic energy today!
BEHAVIOR:
Gambit pulls a bit on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. Gambit was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Gambit did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He was not interested in toys or rawhide. Gambit rushed in quickly during the dog-dog test, but showed no aggression.
Gambit appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. Gambit is an active dog he need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced home.
Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push him out.
Toy: 1. No interest.
Rawhide: 1. No interest.
Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with his tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip long.
GROUP BEHAVIOR: When off leash with other dogs, Gambit engages in rough play with a playful female. He is high energy, mouthy and rowdy when playing but takes correction well.
