06/12/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Fire showed some leash reactivity and possible in-kennel toy guarding behavior when she arrived at the care center. However, her behavior has improved considerably in both regards. She allows walking on both a harness and on a neck collar, though she may still be a bit sensitive to leashing around her neck so we recommend continued use of the harness. In-kennel guarding has not been seen since the first day, and toys/food can be removed without issue. Based upon these improvements, we recommend an experienced adopter. Homes with children can be considered pending interaction. 6/3 SAFER: Fire came into the care center as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. Upon intake Fire was reported to be receptive to introduction, and was loose for all handling, but became uncomfortable when a handler used a slip-lead to leash her. When the leash was removed and placed on a harness she became relaxed and was receptive to all handling. During SAFER Fire was sociable, and allowed the assessor to conduct all handling items without issue. She was easily over aroused during the tag interaction attempting to mouth the leash, but quickly de-escalated when given intervention to redirect her to more appropriate behavior. During the resources portion of the assessment Fire only showed minimal interest in the food, and was easy to handle when engaged with the toys and rawhides. While in the care center Fire has shown potential for possessive behavior over a toy in her kennel. Although this behavior was not displayed when items were removed from her during the assessment, we recommended an experienced adopter with no children, who is comfortable with managing guarding behaviors, should this behavior occur in a home setting. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is down, body tense, mouth closed, lip long, ears back. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, but becomes easily over aroused and attempts to mouth the leash (needed intervention to de-escalate). Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Food: 1. Minimal interest in food, dog licks, then turn away. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish rawhide to you.
