MEDICAL:

Mature cataracts OU, blind OU; Moderate tartar; Normal H/L; Moderate generalized muscle atrophy

BEHAVIOR – AVERAGE

Fiona walks calmly on leash. She was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, wagging tail.  Fiona was calm and relaxed during handling. Sunshine was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. She was not interested in food, toys or rawhide. Fiona was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful.

Fiona not shows any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that she can go to an Average home.

Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.

Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.

Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.

Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.

Food 1. No interest.

Toy 1. No interest.

Rawhide 1. No interest.

Dog – dog 1. Dog approaches the helper, soft body, tail neutral, but not playful.

Group behavior: When off leash with other dogs, Fiona is tolerant of interaction but mostly wanders the yard.

A volunteer writes;

Little Fiona is a pretty ball of fire lighting up her kennel. She is calm and quite on her blankie. I speak softly to her and pet her head…She comes forward and hops in my arms…Fiona hears and smells but she barely sees. I think she is even blind. With guidance, she will walk in one straight line, even climb stairs. Left on her own, she will bump against walls and obstacles. She is savvy, though and ambulates slowly..Fiona ‘s den is spotless. I understand why..She is very much house trained.  She has a good appetite and i can feel sharp little teeth munching on roast beef…Fiona has a lot of weight to catch up with. She is skin and bones  and hides it quite well under a thick and silky coat. Fiona is a pretty elderly, sociable, friendly and quite loving. She was most likely abandoned because of her disability and this is why an adopter or a foster caring, patient and compassionate is needed for this gentle soul. Fiona is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming of a cozy lap and loving hands.
