04/04/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Stumbling upon a photo of Ezekiel when he was a 6 month old puppy in 2011 was enough to break my heart. He was being held in someone’s arms, but looked like he was ready to jump into the arms of the person holding the camera, and puppy eagerness was plastered all over his face. Of course he was adopted, but now Ezekiel again finds himself between people and without a home. He’s no longer small enough to scoop up, and that puppy eagerness has been replaced with a sort of perpetually worried look, but Ezekiel should still be in high demand like a puppy – he is awesome! He is a little tubby and when he sits down he channels a penguin. He pulls some on the leash, but not badly. He seems very housetrained (and, like a puppy, doesn’t even lift his leg!). When I give him a toy he likes to parade around with it in his mouth and he likes to chase tennis balls. He does have some pent up energy and can be a bit jumpy and mouthy when he gets excited, but I have never had a problem channeling his energy into a “sit” – he is very food motivated. He is very friendly and loves to be pet – when I scratch his behind he wags his tail and lowers his body slightly while stretching. He also seems very intelligent. A staff member told me one day he passed Ezekiel’s cage and he was very wiggly and soliciting attention, unfortunately the staff member was busy and couldn’t take him on their usual outing; the next time he passed his cage, Ezekiel made eye contact and then turned his back – making it clear that he felt snubbed (but for the record, he holds no grudges – I saw the two of them together the next day!). Ezekiel is looking for someone to start the next chapter of his life with…and make it the best one yet! Please come meet this sweet boy at Brooklyn ACC!
04/04/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
On 1/8/2015 Ezekiel came to us as seized. The Assistant’s observations: friendly pulls hard on leash to the assessment room. During the assessment Ezekiel appeared to play very strongly mouthing the rope on the tag test, but calmed down rather quickly. He allowed the Assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without displaying aggression, but tense body language on the sensitivity test. When pushed away by the assess-a-hand Ezekiel lifted his head from the food bowl. He kept a firm grip on a rawhide. No other behavior issues; no aggression noted. Ezekiel is a strong and friendly dog who will require an Experienced owner who can handle a stronger dog. Ezekiel may benefit from exercise, brisk walks, and an obedience group class. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is low, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip licks. Tag: 3. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Ezekiel becomes quickly over aroused, and begins to mouth the leash strongly, and jump strongly on the assessor as well. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
