05/23/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Due to the behaviors seen toward other dogs in the care center, the potential to redirect onto her human handlers, and other notes outlined in the GroupBehavior entry, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide behavior modification and counterconditioning to keep Ellie and the dogs and people around her safe. 5/6 SAFER: Helper Dog:A1034643 Ellie came in as a stray surrender due to a conflict with another dog, but her past behaviors in a home are unknown. During her medical exam, Ellie was reported to be sociable, and was tolerant of all handling. During SAFER Ellie appeared to be very interested in interacting with the assessor, and was very attention seeking. Her body was relaxed during the handling items, as well as the tag interaction, and she was easy to handle when engaged with the food and toy items, allowing the assessor to remove them without issue. She was not interested in the rawhides, and during the dog-dog interaction, Ellie approached the helper dog, with a relaxed body posture and neutral wagging tail, and appeared interested in interacting. Ellie pulls hard on the leash when excited, but she is manageable and responsive to guidance. No behavior concerns were seen during SAFER, but due to the incident that brought her into the care center we recommend someone who has significant prior experience with dogs and with offensive dog aggression. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft and a bit distracted. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against her cheek. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip neutral.
05/07/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Due to intake profile, Ellie is muzzled when introduced to dogs off leash. She is very polite greeting at the gate but once in the yard, she moves him into a corner and escalates snarling and growling. 5/23 Ellie has shown significant aggression towards other dogs while in the Care Center, in addition to being surrendered due to conflict with another dog. She has given little warning before escalating. It is recommended that a management and behavior modification plan be implemented with Ellie for safety reasons, as well as to prevent the rehearsal of inappropriate behavior and address Ellie’s underlying emotional response towards other dogs.
