04/06/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
4/6/15 Eli’s family got him from his previous owner 2y ago and surrendered him due to conflicts w/ the landlord and family emergencies. Eli lived w/ a 0-1.5y old baby. He follows him, lies on the floor w/ him, and licks him. Eli is very gentle w/ him. If the baby is rough (hits him), he may pull his head away/out of reach until he stops. Eli is friendly w/ strangers and hasn’t bit anyone. Eli lived w/ a small male dog in the past. He was respectful and allowed him to eat first. He played gently w/ him. He’s friendly w/ dogs outside. He chases cats and squirrels. Eli’s family describes him as friendly, affectionate, playful, excitable, and high energy. He sits on the couch like a person. He loves car rides and running on the beach w/ his owner. He follows his family. He likes rubber balls and will chew up non-durable toys. He plays fetch and chase. Eli lived in and outside. He slept in bed w/ his owner. He ate dry dog food, meat, vegetables, and rice. His favorites are chicken, beef, and raw bones. He went for slow walks and runs, exercised off-leash w/ his owner at the park, and played in his fenced yard. He potties in grass. Eli is housetrained and doesn’t have accidents. He’s well-behaved when home alone inside. When he’s alone in the yard, he barks at night. He may dig and escape. Off-leash, he stays close to his owner but wouldn’t follow others as closely. He knows sit down, lay down, belly (lies on his back), and kisses. Eli may chew sandals. He lies down and loves being brushed. He doesn’t mind having his teeth brushed, being bathed, held/restrained, woken up, or moved off furniture. He doesn’t mind if his owner takes/touches his food while he’s eating, but he growls if new people take his food to tease him. He plays when someone takes his bone/toy. If a stranger comes into his home w/out his owner greeting them, Eli barks at them. He relaxes and is friendly if they start talking to him and say his name. When his owner’s around, he’s always friendly w/ strangers that approach his home/family. He doesn’t mind storms. Eli had soft body and wagging tail during handling-scan (+, should trace to owner), collar, switching leashes, pictures. He demonstrated all his tricks w/ his owner. He sat when I asked and took treats gently. While I was at the computer, he very gently stood up against me and wagged his tail while I pet him. When I stooped down, he leaned close to me and licked my face lots. He tried mounting my leg
04/07/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: In all my years here I have never read an owner surrender report like Eli’s. He lived with a baby he used to follow around and kiss, and when the baby would get rough, he would just tuck his head. He lived with a small dog who he let eat first-what a gentleman! He’s apparently well behaved inside, house trained, and knows all sorts of tricks. And what he really loves are car rides and running on the beach. It’s hard to put this together with a dog who is so overwhelmed in the shelter it is difficult for him to make eye contact, but he rallies to hang with other dogs in playgroup and walk sweetly with the volunteers. We are so eager for him to be back in a family environment where he can open his giant heart once again, this time forever.
04/07/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Eli walks with a fearful body language. He was fearful and repeatedly attempted to get away from the handler during the assessment. Eli was shy and nervous and trembled during handling, with a fearful body language. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He was not interested in food, toys or rawhide. Eli was surrender to us. According to his previous owner he lived with a 0-1.5y old baby. He follows him, lies on the floor with him, and licks him. Eli is very gentle with him. If the baby is rough (hits him), he may pull his head away and out of reach until he stops. Eli is friendly with strangers. Eli doesn’t mind if his owner takes and touches his food while he’s eating, but he growls if new people take his food to tease him”. Eli was not very sociable and fearful during the assessment. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Eli is somewhat fearful and need time to warm up to the handler. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. . No interest. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest.
