A Volunteer Wrote: This enchanting little girl should have been to the manor born, and was named appropriately. Sadly, she has lost her home, and is looking for her next castle (although a studio apartment would work quite nicely!) Dutchess is of course beautiful, with ears that make us giggle as they point upwards scanning the world like radio antennae. She’s clearly lived in a lovely home in the past because she is in such beautiful shape, appears house trained, and walks gorgeously on a leash. In a momentary snapshot of her life here she has had trouble sharing her food and treats, but who could blame her for holding onto the little that has been given to her when her home has been taken away? This is a lovely, beautiful dog who once knew a beautiful home and is waiting for the next to appear. Please come rescue Dutchess and make her your queen!

A volunteer writes:

I met precious Dutchess the day after she arrived at the care center. She had just lost her home and her owners as her family was evicted. She was scared in her upper kennel but responded to my caresses and encouragements. She was skittish on the ground. All those people, all those dogs…She was totally uncomfortable and even soft growled at a pooch who was “in her face”. She was better, later in the day. The yard was quiet. She showed me some of her obedience skills, come, sit, stay, hop on the bench and settled  next to me  for bonding. Yesterday, she even started playing ball . Although still shy and shelter shocked , Dutchess, who looks like an elegant and manicured silver rabbit has made a beautiful turnaround. She comes now right away to her door and hops lightly to the yard. She is happy to have a friend. My lap where she feels more secure is still her preferred spot.Dutchess has been beautifully cared for by her masters and seems to have had some training. She displayed some guarding of her food and possessions here at the care center during her behavioral evaluation .Her owners  or family, old or new, will have to be counseled about the issue if indeed it persists in the home. Dutchess is a delicious, tiny, adorable and affectionate young girl. She deserves every effort put into her and is waiting , hopeful, at the Manhattan Care Center, to push her door open to happiness.
