04/17/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Dune was one shy pooch when he arrived at the care center. Huddled at the back of his arrival kennel, bent in two and tail tucked between his legs during our walk. His stay in the adoption quarters changed it all…Dune is not hiding his head in the sand anymore but keeps it high on a prancing body. According to the many volunteers who took him out to the park, he is a great walker, very much housetrained, civil with other dogs met and does not go after the birds. I knew already that he could sit on command , come when called and loved treats. Although timid in the begining of his stay, Dune was already a fan of caresses. He is a handsome boy , a bit on the thin side and clad in a flawless and shiny silvery coat. Come and meet Dune for yourself. He thought he was someone’s friend just yesterday….Maybe , he could just become yours…forever this time. Dune is at the Manhattan Care Center.
04/07/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Dune walks calmly on leash. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body and tail, but trying to stay close. Dune was shy and nervous and trembled during handling, with a fearful body language. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Dune did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He was not interested in toys or rawhide. Dune was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful. Dune was a bit fearful during the assessment but he stay close to the assessor. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Dune is somewhat fearful and need time to warm up to the handler. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog – dog: 1. Dog approaches the helper, soft body, tail neutral, but not playful. Helper:A1032135
