12/05/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Proving the old adage that good things come in small packages, may I present… Duke! Adorably small with fabulous ears framing his winsome face, Duke is compact and snuggly. Quiet in his kennel, he starts wagging his tail the moment I approach, lets me leash him easily and out we go. Taking advantage of being outside in every way tells me he’s housetrained, and he pulls on the leash to get to every great thing in our path worth sniffing. He wags his tail when I talk to him, and wags when I tell him our next stop is the backyard. Off leash, he’s in my lap for some snuggles and shows off his sit in exchange for a treat which he takes softly. Duke isn’t interested in playing with a ball at this time, happier exploring our pen and snuggling in my lap. In group with other dogs he greets the helper dog and walks away when offered correction. I can hear him saying, ‘done, I’m over you’ as he goes on his way. Adorably miniature, this well taken care of little dude is looking for a new home. You’re invited to stop by and meet our visiting royalty, Duke, and we know you’ll want to make him yours!
12/04/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Duke pulls a bit on the leash. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body and tail, but trying to stay close. Duke had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. He was not interested in toys. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Duke is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Duke is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is a bit fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1. No interest. Playgroup Notes: Duke greets the helper dog and repeatedly attempts to get himself behind her, posturing to mount does not. When correction is offered he walks away and does not reapproach.
12/02/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Duke has mostly displayed sexually motivated behaviors during off-leash inteaction time with dogs. He has not yet been introduced off leash to a female dog while in our care. Based on observations made while in our care, the behavior department recommends that a pre-adoption interaction before placement into a home with another dog. Duke arrived into our care a s astray so any in home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. When off leash with oher dogs, Duke greets, then follows the helper dog, attempting to mount. He wanders his surroundings when unable to mount. 12/3 update: Duke greets the helper dog and repeatedly attempts to get himself behind her, posturing to mount but does not. When correction is offered he walks away and does not reapproach. 12/8 update: Duke is anxious when alone in the pen and does briefly attempt to mount the helper dog. When she walks away he does the same and explores the yard.
