10/09/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
10/09/15 19:36 Basic Info: Duffy is a Shih Tzu/Pittbull mix. He is about 1 year and 3 months old. He has had a little dryness in his ear in the past. He was last seen by a vet about 4 months ago. He is described as a very playful dog. Social Life and Personality: Duffy has spent some time with a 1 year old child. He did his best to stay away. He might be best of in a home with no children. He may not be crazy about other dog. He has been known to bark and growl at other large dogs. Duffy is very used to cats. He doesn’t play with them but he doesn’t seem to mind them at all. Duffy is house trained very well but he has been known to tear up his share of shoes every once and awhile when he’s left along for more than a few hours. He is described as a mildly active dog that is playful and affectionate most of the time. He can be fearful at times and might snap if he is not comfortable. Behavior History: Duffy has never bitten a person or another animal. He has snapped at a few people before (mostly men). If someone unfamilar aproches the home or a family member Duffy will bark and maybe even growl. He is not crazy about the water or bath time in general but he will allow it. For a new family to know: Duffy knows how to sit on command but it seems like he might only do it when there is a treat being offered. He is used to slow walks on the leash. Every so often his former owner would take him on short jogs. When it comes to toys Duffy like stuffed, squeeky toys the most but anything that he can play tug of war with is great. He has never been create trained but he might do great with it. Duffy used to chew up all the shoes in the house but he has relaxed as he gets older. When he is home with his owner, he tends to like to be around them. He might even follow them around the house. During thunder storms or fireworks Duffy will cry and hide under the bed. He is not a fan. He loves dry food and loves sleeping in his owner’s bed with them at night.

10/12/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Duffy came into our center as an owner surrender. It is reported that Duffy lived with an infant and avoided contact. It is reported Duffy lived with and is tolerant of cats but barks and growls at other large dogs. Owner reports when left alone in the home Duffy will sometimes tear up shoes. He is reportedly sometimes fearful and will snap if not comfortable, mostly with men. However, it should be noted this snap has never escalated to a bite and Duffy is actually showing good communication and coping skills. Duffy was a bit hesitant and avoided the rope when in kennel, but was easily distracted by a treat and once leashed was social and friendly on his relief walk. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, tail wagging, body neutral. Duffy stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body and face soft, mouth closed. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft, but showed some displacement behavior by shaking off after second pass. He approached assessor at end of game briefly, but became uncomfortable during positioning for Squeeze, pulling away, displacement scratching, shoulder rubbing, rolling over. Squeeze item was directed to Flank, where Duffy had no response. He had no interest in Food. Duffy playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip with loose body. He had minimal interest in Rawhide. Off leash with other dogs, Duffy played briefly with a male dog and nicely greeted a dog walking by. The Behavior Team feels Duffy would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have very young children. Older children should have an in-depth interaction before considering adoption. Once comfortable, Duffy was friendly and interactive, but needs an adopter that understands his clear communication signals he is giving when uncomfortable with some handling and leashing. He may also benefit from crate training to avoid destruction of household items when left alone in the home. Look: 1. Eyes averted, with tail wagging. Sensitivity: 1. Stands still and accepts the touch, face/body soft. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is uncomfortable, and moves his legs/body away Flank squeeze 1: 1. No response Food: No interest Toy 1: 1. Dog playfully engages, firm grip, loose body Rawhide: 1 Minimal interest Dog: dog-brief play, greets politely
