11/27/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
11/27/15 20:15 Basic Information: Peanut is a 2 year old spayed American Pit Bull who was adopted from ACC in October. He was surrendered because of pet conflict and child conflict. She has no known injuries or health problems and the last time she went to the vet was in October. The two things her previous owner liked most about her were; she’s friendly and loves to snuggle. Social Life and Personality: Around children 3 years old Peanut nips and chases. She lived in her previous home with a pit bull and around him she growls, nips and plays rough. She is not house-trained and has accidents daily. She was kept indoors only and has a medium activity level. She can be described as playful, confident, affectionate and friendly. Behavior: Peanut has never bitten a person or animal and drawn blood. If she is eating and someone attempts to touch her food bowl or treat she growls, keeps her head down and continues to eat, gets closer to her bowl and has a tense body. She is friendly if her toy is taken while playing, if she is pushed off the furniture, having her coat brushed, held or restrained, or if an unfamiliar person approached her previous home. She isn’t bothered if she is given a bath or if her nails are trimmed or her paws were touched, or if she was disturbed while sleeping. If an unfamiliar person approached her previous owner she would bark. For a New Family to Know: Peanut knows how to sit. For exercise she went on brisk walks 4 times a day. She liked to play with squeaky toys. Her favorite game is tug. When her previous owners were home she would tend to follow them around. When left alone in the home she is well-behaved but goes to bathroom indoors if she wasn’t taken outside. When off leash outdoors she wanders but comes when called. She ate dry Call of the Wild and at night she slept in her dog bed. Behavior during intake: Peanut allowed me to collar her, and pet her. She sat when asked and took treats out of hand. She had a wagging tail and wiggly body. She showed no signs of aggression.
12/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Mirror, mirror on the wall, who has the best ears of all? Peanut!!! I wonder if she gets radio signals through those fabulous ears??? Peanut is just that, a peanut! Petite and perfectly proportioned, Peanut is all tail waggy at the prospect of going for a walk. She shows off her housetraining skills the moment we’re out the door and then walks, stops, surveys, walks, stops, surveys as we head to the park. It’s almost as if she’s saying to herself – this looks very familiar. And indeed it should, as Peanut was adopted from us a short time ago and returned as she her people felt she played too rough with the resident dog, and would sometimes get nippy with a grandchild. Peanut also displayed some good guarding in her home, so should be fed separately while that’s being worked on. Peanut and I had fun together – she’s playful, sweet, comes when called, sits (sometimes) and takes treats gently. She gives sweet kisses and loves to be pet. Although Peanut did well on her behavior assessment,(she jumped up to cuddle and hug the assessor at the end) based on reports from her previous adopter it’s recommended that Peanut go into an adult only home. She’ll make an awesome companion and a perfect lap dog, so if you’re looking for a fun, low key and friendly little girl, ask for Peanut today.
12/01/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Update 12.1.15 Peanut has displayed offensive behavior toward other dogs while in our care, and has also been cited in her previous home. See Group Behavior entry for more details. The behavior department feels that she would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. SAFER 11.30.15 Peanut came into our center as an owner surrender citing pet and child conflict. It is reported Peanut nips at the owner’s 3 year old grandchild if giving Peanut too much attention. It is also reported Peanut plays rough with the other resident dog. Owner describes Peanut as playful, confident, affectionate, and friendly. Owner states Peanut may growl if bothered while eating, if a person gets closer her body becomes tense. During intake, Peanut had a soft body and wagging tail, allowing all handling. She held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, tail wag. She leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, tail wagging, ears back, mouth closed. Peanut followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft, jumping softly at end of game, tail wagging. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, tail wagging. At end of Squeeze item, Peanut jumped up affectionately on assessor to cuddle and hug. She had minimal interest in Toy, sniffing a few times before turning away. When off leash with other dogs, Peanut is initially a bit stiff but allows greeting. She approaches and briefly greets the other dog, but does not engage further. She may benefit from learning the command ‘drop it’ as well as trade up games. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. 10/13/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Peanut was returned into our care, with the owner citing conflict with another dog in their home. While in the care center, Peanut has displayed concerning behavior toward dogs both on and off leash. When greeting a dog in the yard, she displays offsenisve behaviors, charging the gate while snapping and growling. She is muzzled for the interaction, causing distraction., but growls when the helper dog approaches within close proximity. Based on the observations made on Peanut by her previous owner, and also while in our care, the behavior department advises against placement into a home with another dog. When off leash with other dogs, Peanut is intially stiff-bodied, but allows greeting. She approaches and briefly greets the helper dog, but does not engage further. 10/14 update: Peanut is tolerant of greeting. She corrects mounting. 12/1 update: Peanut becomes stiff-bodied and reactive while being walked past other dogs on her way to the yard. When walked up to the gate to greet the helper dog, Peanut charges the gate, snapping. A muzzle is applied for safety reasons before bringing her into the pen off-leash. Upon entering the pen, Peanut is distracted by the muzzle, but does begin to growl when the helper dog approaches within close proximity.
