09/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Diva came into our center as an owner surrender after owner cited being bitten by her dog. Upon intake, Diva appeared to be very frightened at the front of the crate, wide eyes, but showed no aggressive behaviors. Admissions counselor was able to leash and transfer her from cage to crate with no issues. During her initial medical exam, Diva was very nervous, allowing all handling with moving slowly. She walked low and cautiously into the SAFER assessment room. Diva was given a significant amount of time to warm up before beginning the assessment. She has become comfortable with staff and opened up once she saw someone familiar. Diva held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, body neutral. She stood still and accepted the touch, lip lick, body a bit cautious. She did not engage in play during Tag game, unresponsive at each pass. Diva had no response to both paw Squeeze attempts. She ate enthusiastically and required a bit of pressure to lift her head out of the Food bowl. Diva had no interest in Toy or Rawhide, although staff has reported she does enjoy rawhide in her kennel, so this may be due to nervousness in an unfamiliar environment. Diva approached helper dog at appropriate pace, ears back, body not stiff. After the assessment, Diva affectionately interacted with staff she was familiar with. Due to her severe nervousness and extensive time needed to warm up as well as reason for owner surrender, the Behavior Team feels Diva would do best with a New Hope Partner. She may initially benefit from being spoken to softly in a calm, quiet, structured environment where she can relax and know what to expect. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with body neutral. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body cautious, mouth closed, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Food 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down, lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip long or neutral
