04/06/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/06/15 17:40 BASIC INFO Dice’s family got him as a gift 9 months ago. They surrendered him because their son has asthma and they are moving. PEOPLE Dice lived with an 11 year old. He was relaxed, playful, tolerant, and played exuberantly with him. He’s friendly with strangers and hasn’t bit anyone. ANIMALS Dice hasn’t been around other animals. PERSONALITY Dice’s family describes him as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, excitable, and high energy. He likes to play chase and tug. He didn’t have toys. HABITS AND TRAINING Dice lived tethered in a concrete yard with a 6′ fence. He slept on the ground. He sometimes escaped. Dice hasn’t spent time indoors. He knows sit and understands Spanish better than English. He ate dry and wet Purina dog food. He played in the yard and went for brisk walks for exercise. BEHAVIOR Dice is friendly with strangers that approach his home/family. He doesn’t mind when someone takes his food/treat/toy, brushes him, trims his nails, holds/restrains him, or wakes him up. He’s nervous during baths and storms. INTAKE Dice had soft body, wagging tail, and open mouth during all handling-scan (-), collar, switching leashes, untangling from leash, petting, pictures. He stood up against me and wagged his tail while I pet him. He stood up to investigate counters and things hanging on the walls. After his owners left, he sometimes sat or lied down watching the door and whining a little. He sniffed treats but didn’t take them. He sat when asked and didn’t pull on his leash.
04/10/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Puppy Dice is an eyestopper! His outfit is stunning: white leggings on all fours, sporting a caramel colored coat over his strong, lean body, and a mischievous mask accenting his clearly outlined, open face. Handsome beyond words, this youngster does not yet have the confidence to match. This may be due, in part, to his having not been exposed to much of the world in his short life. As we walk, Dice’s leash manners are impeccable. He is glued to my hip, carefully stepping with tail tucked, alert, but relatively unafraid and very curious. His gaze wanders, his head tilts, as he looks with interest and absorbs so much he has never seen: a basketball game, a stream of traffic, a park bench. Then suddenly… a bird!… and a different Dice. He is focused and sure, his tail high. He takes a quick step forward as the bird flies away and, just as quickly as he became a bird dog, Dice reverts to his more reserved posture. When I sit down, he tries to awkwardly flop his way up on the bench but can’t quite make it. So instead, Dice lifts his paw up and rests it on my knee. A gentlemanly gesture. As I pet him, Dice is soft and still, accepting of my love, but politely noncommittal. His eyes gently meet mine. His former owner says that Dice knows Spanish and I think I might learn a few words to better woo him. He is also said to be an escape artist, although we have seen no such behavior. Wherever he lands- in a cage, by a bench, in the backyard- Dice has been quiet and compliant. Not surprisingly, his former owner says that Dice has no experience with other animals. At the shelter he has been standoffish so far. Tolerant and playful with kids, Dice is said to enjoy ballplaying, chase, and tag. And, true to form, when the ball comes out, he again comes alive! He runs and jumps and swats and chews… and he doesn’t need a partner! He’d much rather amuse himself with his own game. Handsome and independent! It is true that, at this point, Dice’s personality has not yet fully manifest, but we have seen glimpses of a playful as well as a sociable, well-mannered young man. Given time, the true Dice will unfold before our eyes and we will no doubt see someone who would be a loyal and loving companion for any family looking for a physically fit, active addition to their clan.
04/07/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Dice came to our center as an owner surrender. It is reported he lived tethered to a fence in a concrete yard and slept on the ground, it appears he was never allowed inside the house. Dice was nervous upon arrival at the center. He is cautious when coming out of his kennel, but walked nicely and did not pull at all on his relief walk. He held eye gaze with the assessor for three full seconds during the Look item of the SAFER assessment. Dice was never fully comfortable with any of the tactile portions of the assessment, taking his body away from the assessor as much as he could during Sensitivity and Squeeze…always keeping his tail down, but did allow the handling. He had no interest in the food offered to him. Dice enjoyed playing with the toy, but relinquished it very easily. He approached the helper dog with a tail at neutral spine level, the first time he picked up his tail in the entire assessment. Dice did not show any aggressive behaviors at all, just nervous at the new surroundings of being inside. The Behavior Team feels that even though he has shown no aggressive behaviors, he will do best in an Experienced home that will be patient and structured so as to provide the guidance to teach Dice how to become comfortable living inside a home as a family pet. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Food: No interest Toy 1: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip neutral.
