08/19/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes (as told by Dewey): Hiiiiii! My name is Dewey and up until now I lived with my family which included five kids ages 1-13. If you think that’s easy, you try it sometime! I liked them and played nicely with them. My owner said she no longer had time to take care of me, so here I am, looking for a new family to love. I like to be brushed and get baths, am housetrained, and my owner described me as “friendly, affectionate, playful and active”. My favorite game is fetch, and I know ‘sit’, lie down’ and ‘come’, and I like to sleep on a blanket in my person’s bedroom at night. I made a new friend yesterday, her name is ‘Volunteer’. She took me for a walk so I could go potty, and I pulled a bit on the leash at first but then walked nicely with her. We stopped to take some pictures and it was a very serious thing, as Volunteer told me good pictures would help get me adopted. I think that means going to live with a new family and I would really like that. I’m a bit too thin so need some fattening up. I love to snuggle and give kisses, and Volunteer and I sat on a bench together and cuddled and exchanged kisses. That was my favorite part of my time with her. I played with some other dogs here but was a bit nervous as it was my first time; I was ‘tolerant’ but didn’t really engage. I didn’t have experience with other dogs where I lived before so this is all new but I’m trying really hard. Volunteer told me I’m so handsome and she loves my tall rabbit ears. She’s funny! I’d love to come home with you – I’m compact and handsome, and although I can be a bit shy here, it’s really because I’m used to a home. I’m ready to be your family – come meet me.
08/17/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Dewey came to our center as an owner surrender. Owner reports Dewey lived with five children between the ages of 1-13 and was relaxed and playful around them as well as friendly towards strangers. Behavior around cats is unknown. Upon intake, Dewey was relaxed with a loose body and allowed all handling. Dewey pulled slightly on leash for his relief walk. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft, tail wagging. Dewey leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, tail wagging. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft, settling easily at end. Dewey pulled his paw back gently during first Squeeze attempts, no pull back on second attempt but mouthed assessor’s hand lightly, no pressure. He gulped Food when approached by assess-a-hand and required a bit of pressure to lift his head out of the Food bowl. Dewey took Toy and Rawhide away with a neutral body. When off leash with other dogs, Dewey is nervous and does not approach to greet. He is tolerant of being sniffed but does not pursue further interaction.
