04/14/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/14/15 16:31 Deuce was brought here by his neighbor. She had met him on walks but doesn’t know his owner personally. She’s seen him tethered to a parking sign for 3 days, with lots of feces around him. She gave him a bottle of water and a hot dog and walked with him from Queens to Manhattan. She describes him as friendly, outgoing, playful, curious, and adventurous. She said that he approached all people including children in a relaxed, friendly manner. He approached dogs of all sizes in a friendly, excited, wiggly, playful manner. He wanted to greet everyone they passed as well as investigate a lot of smells. Deuce had a soft body and wagging tail during handling-scan (negative), collar, petting, switching leashes. He stood close to me with an open mouth and wagged his tail while I pet him and massaged his ears. He took treats gently from me.
04/19/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Deuce is a young man, barely one year old who walked all the way from Queens to the Manhattan Care Center with his finder who seemed to know him very well and had only compliments to make about him. All along the way, he was very welcoming of passers-by. He was attached for a few days to a structure, abandoned to his lonesome and the elements. Deuce was friendly as described by his good samaritan with the staff who admitted him to the care center. From that moment, Deuce was one nervous Nellie plastered to the back of his kennel and growling upon approach. Even today, as I tried to leash him, he danced back and forth, very wary and not ready to be leashed. After a good ten minutes of hard effort, Deuce marched to the yard. He ate with appetite roast beef from my hand, sat as I ordered and got petted. Two hours down the line, I went back for him. Deuce was at his door and leashed in no time. I felt comfortable enough with him to let him free in a pen where he acted like a more comfortable dog this time, looking right at me and my camera. he posed his head in my lap for caresses. At our third encounter, later in the day, Deuce seemed happy. What a victory for him. I was so proud of his achievement.I think there is hope for Deuce providing slow introductions, a stable environment and guidance in experienced hands. Deuce is at the Manhattan Care Center waiting for his teacher and savior. I so hope he gets his chance to show to others how good a dog he is.
04/16/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Deuce was a bit difficult to remove from his kennel, he was in the back of the kennel with his tail tucked, body stiff. Once he was out he pull a bit on leash trying to escape and hide behind any object. He was extremely fearful and uncomfortable during the handling. During the look item he shows his teeth and gives a low growl and then he retreats away from the assessor. For safety reason we skip the handling part of the assessment. Deuce did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He was not interested in toys or rawhide. Deuce does not approach other dog, attempts to exit. Deuce came to the shelter as stray. The person that found him describes him as friendly, outgoing, playful, curious, and adventurous. She said that he approached all people including children in a relaxed, friendly manner. He approached dogs of all sizes in a friendly, excited, wiggly, playful manner. Staff member stated that Deuce had a soft body and wagging tail during handling-scan (negative), collar, petting, switching leashes. He stood close to the staff member with an open mouth and wagged his tail while he pet him and massaged his ears and he took treats gently from him”. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home.
