09/23/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Davon is definitively a head turner. In the street or in the yard, all the eyes are on us… well rather on him. He is gorgeous and quite nicely behaved on the leash, barely pulling and accepting my caresses with an engaging look. He does his business right away as we exit the building and even sits on command, briefly for the photo shoot. Davon arrived at the care center early this morning. He is a large dog and is not too fond of his kennel. Barking dogs around him upset him and he voices his discontentment and distress by sharing the ruckus. Davon needs to settle down for us to get a better idea of his personality. I am looking forward to see a bit more of him and report hopefully that his behavior matches his good looks… Meanwhile, keep in mind that Davon is with us, here at the Manhattan Care Center and waiting for a fresh start in his life.

09/25/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Davon appears to have some frustration-based behaviors that may need additional follow-up once he is out of the care center. He has shown strong reactivity to other dogs both when they pass his kennel and when he is on leash. When left in a pen in the yard, he will jump against the sides of the pen while hard barking if another dog is in a pen nearby. When muzzled and put into playgroup, he exhibited concerning behavior, throwing his body at and muzzle punching the helper dog. We feel that due to the intensity and consistency of the behavior, Davon will do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification. 9/24 SAFER: Davon pulls a bit on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Davon was calm and relaxed when playing tag with assessor. He was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. Davon took the toy and rawhide away with a soft body language. He rushed in confidently towards the friendly dog with his body tense, ears erect and high tail wag. Davon show a bit concern during the dog interaction he is very focus. He shows some frustration and barks at other dogs when he is on a walk. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, low wagging tail, open mouth. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body likely a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide. Dog-dog: 3. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with his tail high, stiff body, head tall, and ears erect. Helper: A1048751

Davon approaches the gate to greet and becomes stiff then hard barks without being easily distracted, so he is muzzled.
