07/16/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Oh, Davey, how magnificent you must have been! You are sprawled out on your bed and when our eyes meet yours respond softly. In your youth I imagine you sprawled out like this only after you’d finished taking on the world for the day. You haven’t touched your food. When you were a puppy you eagerly tunneled your way through your bigger litter mates to get to your mother’s milk. You are slow to get up, and look up at me as if ashamed of your pace, and grateful that I am adjusting mine. Before, you could challenge a team of oxen, but maybe you were considerate enough not too. When we get outside you stand in one place, relieve yourself, then move away from it. I can only imagine you before – a filled out, tuxedo beauty; your person proudly walking you through the streets of Brooklyn, or your paws leaving craters as you gallivanted in your yard after the first snowfall of the year. Your wonderful distinguished face still stops people in their tracks, and you accept compliments from passersby with grace. You don’t always want them, but when you do, you take treats gently from my hand. What tricks did you do before your body got in the way? When I talk to you you wiggle your nubby tail, and as you begin to make your way over to me, you start to favor one back leg. We meet half way. The ground used to thunder under your feet. You let me pet your ears, rub your chest, scratch your chin, and your eyes always looks gentle and full of wisdom. When my hands move along your back your nub becomes cautious, as if you’re worried they will reach the places that hurt. I can imagine how your whole back end used to wag with it when your person got home from work every day. I hope that you received many belly rubs, got steak on holidays, and were allowed in the bed; that you got to go upstate, had a playmate two streets over, and that your person always made you a coordinating Halloween costume; that you were loved and this is the first time you’ve felt alone. You stay right at my side as we go back in, paying no mind to the young bucks we pass – they’ve got nothing on you anyway. When I put you back in your cage you gulp up water before stretching back out on your bed, and I hope you can hear me when I say, oh Davey, how magnificent you still are!
07/16/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper Dog:A1043852 Davey came into the care center as a stray so we do not have any information on his past behaviors in a home. At intake Davey was reported to be a bit nervous and tense, but he allowed all handling. Due to Davey’s medical condition SAFER handling items could not be fairly conducted at this time. Davey appears to be social and was receptive to an approach form the assessor allowing petting. He allowed the assessor to gently hold his head for the look item, and maintained a relaxed body posture. During the resource portion of the assessment Davey was not interested in any of the items, and during the dog-dog interaction Davey did not approach the helper dog. Due to our inability to fully assess Davey in his current condition, as well as the responses offered during his medical examination, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can address Davey’s medical needs and the re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Food: No interest Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog.
