12/29/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Without meaning to, I saved the best for last. Miss Dancer isn’t happy in her kennel and she lets us know about it, but offer her the leash and she’s thrilled to come out for a walk. Her leash manners are outstanding, what a pleasure after a long day of walking dogs. She’s likely housetrained, and her pleasantly plump figure reflects a dog who hasn’t skimped on meals. She’s also likely been a mom a couple of times, and we girls know what that can do to one’s figure. Dancer was found hiding under someone’s porch to get out of the rain so we credit her for being pretty smart to do that! She’s shy and confused and takes a little time to warm up, but when she does she follows me around the pen, sits by me when I stop to take some notes, and puts her head in my lap, sighing deeply as I pet her. Lifting her head for an under the chin scratch, she’s as gentle and sweet as can be. She’s so happy to be pet, and I’m so happy to do that for her. Alert to other dogs in adjoining kennels she walks over to observe, and give a quick tail wag of greeting. And in the big laugh of the day, as a volunteer in another pen was telling her dog to sit, Dancer would promptly sit down too! She kept sitting, looking at me wondering where her treat was. Of course she got one and took it so gently. At the end of our time together Dancer became softly playful and tail waggy and I know that with more time she will open up more and more. She’s awesome, I’m in love and know you will be too when you meet her. Another volunteer writes: I wish Dancer could tell us her story. She’s been well taken care of before joining us, and yet here she is. She’s serene and gentle, and gives us a few barks when things change and she needs a bit of time to process the change. She’s a volunteer favorite to walk as her leash manners are fabulous, she’s housetrained and while she doesn’t solicit affection she’s happy to lay her head in my lap and enjoy some petting. Her head gets heavier in my lap as she gives herself into my petting looking up at me with her crystal clear soulful eyes. It’s said that they eyes are the window to the soul, and when you look into Dancer’s eyes you see a kind, gentle, confused soul who wants nothing more than people to love and love her back.
12/27/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Dancer came into our center after a member of the public found her under their porch, growling and barking. She was very defensive in her kennel, growling and lunging at front. Dancer was cautious upon entering SAFER assessment area, focused on any sudden noises inside the room or out. She required slow movements in order to complete the SAFER assessment. Dancer allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body neutral. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, tail down, ears back, body remaining neutral. Dancer licked her lips throughout entire Tag game, following at the end of the leash but distracted and unresponsive to each pass. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, lip lick. Dancer had no interest in Toy, flinching fearfully as Toy was presented. When off leash with other dogs, Dancer is tense and avoidant of the greeter dog. Due to her level of discomfort, the Behavior Team feels she would do best with an Experienced adopter that does Not Have Children. She may benefit initially from a calm, quiet, structured environment so she can relax and know what to expect. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, mouth closed, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, lip lick Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog does not pull back paw, lip lick. Toy 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Dancer is tense and avoidant of the greeter dog.
12/24/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Dancer has been uncomfortable when interacting with dogs off leash. She is tense and will over react when the helper dog approaches her. She came into the care center as a stray, so her behaviors in the home are unknown. Based on this information, the behavior department recommends that Dancer does not go to a home with other dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Dancer is tense and avoidant of the greeter dog. 12/29 update: Dancer briefly greets the helper dog, but when he turns away she over reacts and barks/growls at him. She quickly ceases when handler correction is offered.
