10/07/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
10/07/15 18:58 Basic Information Dakota is a 3 year old neutered brown and white pit bull that came in as owner surrender. She could not keep him anymore because she is moving out of state and her new apartment does not allow pets. Owner stated that she received him as a gift from a friend when he was a puppy and has had him since. His last vet visit was in February of 2014 at which he received all his vaccines. Owner stated that he does have a slight murmur. He favorite thing about him are that he’s affectionate and smart. Social Life and Personality Dakota is relaxed, playful and respectful with children and cats. She had a cat in the home as well that he enjoyed playing with. Owner stated that he barks at other dogs as a way of signaling to them that he wants to play. He is house trained and only has accidents when he’s overly excited, for example when someone new comes over, resulting in him urinating on his self. He has a medium activity level and owner described him as playful, pushy, confident, excitable, affectionate, mellow, independent, friendly and spoiled. Behavior Issues When left home alone for too long, Dakota does become anxious which results in him tearing open cushions and couch pillows. He displays no other signs of behavior issues and has never bitten or scratched another person or animal. He isn’t bothered with his food bowl being touched while he’s eating, having toys taken from him or having his nails trimmed. He is afraid of getting baths and is friendly with strangers and house visitors. Upon intake, Dakota was friendly. His tail was wagging and he licked handler’s hand. He allowed his self to be handled, collard and photographed. For a New Family to Know Dakota knows the commands sit, down and stay. For exercise, Dakota receives both on and off leash walks. During off-leash walks, he listens to his owner’s commands and stays close by. She home, He tends to follow her around the house. His favorite spots to be in are the hallway due to the cold air and on the owner’s bed. Dakota eats Blue Wilderness brand wet and dry food. His favorite treats are sweet potatoes dog treats. Owner stated that he also likes fruits and vegetables such as apples, carrots and celery. He sleeps on the couch.
10/12/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: So far, every time I’ve taken Dakota out, he wets his bed a little bit. He is the cutest little man; he wears a worried face and a deformity to one of his paws makes it look like he’s always in third position. He is described by his previous owner as spoiled and friendly with strangers, but he is out of his element now, nervous and shy. Though his nerves get in the way, he does seem to have housetraining; his cage is always clean when I approach and he is quick to relieve himself outside. He stays right at my side on leash and looks up often, in a cautious, but hopeful way. He loves treats, takes them very softly, and will “sit” for them. On our first walk he let me pet him and would make brief eye contact before looking away. I knelt down and called him over, he approached but stopped an arm’s length away from me. When I brought him to the yard I expected Dakota to keep to himself and explore, which he did, but then he came and sat at my feet! When I encouraged him to join me on the bench he did so without hesitation. He seems itchy in spots and welcomed my help scratching. When I tapped my hands against the bench to encourage interaction he licked them gently, offered his paws, and at one point seemed tempted to show me his belly. On subsequent times together, Dakota will hop on the bench first — as if to invite me to join him! When I do he turns his back to me at first, but makes contact, and when I coo him over he’ll re-position himself and softly lick my face. When I pass by his cage later he wags his tail, even makes prolonged soft eye contact and barks at me. Needless to say, I am completely smitten with Dakota — he is incredibly sweet and endearing! I look forward to seeing him come out of shell, but really he deserves someone else beating me to it. He is already neutered, has a harmonious history with both children and cats, and is waiting to be scooped up at Brooklyn ACC!
10/10/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Dakota came to us as an owner surrender on 10/07/15. It was reported by the owner that Dakota is relaxed, playful and respectful with children and cats. The owner did say that when left alone sometimes Dakota will tear apart cushions and couch pillows. Since Dakota is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, such as tearing up the couch pillows. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Dakota will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. When entering the behavior room Dakota did seem visibly nervous and was not very interested in interacting with the assessor. She allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without displaying any signs of aggression, but did seem very weary of fast movements. She proved a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. Dakota only displayed minimal interest in the toy, but was easy to handle when chewing on the rawhide items. The behavior department believes that Dakota can go to an adopter with an average amount of dog experience. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body soft. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then turns away. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish rawhide to you.
