BEHAVIOR

Dakota came into the care center as a stray, so we do not have information on her past behaviors in a home. At intake it was noted that Dakota was very nervous and growled at an admissions counselor when approached, but once her finders left the facility Dakota became relaxed and allowed all handled. During SAFER Dakota was fearful, and trembled when interacting with the assessor but remained close and allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Dakota was also fearful during the tag interaction and quickly turned when touched, but did not escalate to snapping. She was easy to handle when engaged with the food and toy items during the resources portion of the assessment, and was not interested in the rawhides. During the dog-dog interaction Dakota approached the helper dog with stiff body language, and growling. Dakota becomes social when given the opportunity to interact at her own pace, but can become very fearful of sudden movements and will do best with a slow approach.  Dakota also displayed discomfort when around other dogs, and would do best in a home with no other dogs. The department feels Dakota would be best suited for an experienced adopter with no children.

Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.

Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, her body is stiff and trembling, and mouth closed, lip long, ears back, and lip licks.

Tag: 3. Dog repeatedly spins toward the touch, and repeatedly tries to exit. Dog is crouching, tail is tucked, mouth closed, body stiff.

Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back.

Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against her cheek.

Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you.

Rawhide: 1. No interest.
