Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper Dog:A1039298 Cross lived with adults and a 9 year old child that grew up around him. His owners state that he maintains a relaxed body around people of all ages but will usually ignore everyone. His owners also state he will chase cats, but likes to play with dogs, and he is very gentle with them. Cross was reported to have a medium activity level, and his family describes him as a big lap dog and loves to sleep in the bed with his humans. It was noted that he isn’t bothered if you touch his bowl while eating and if you take his bone or toy away his owners stated that he thinks you’re playing with him. It was also noted that he is tolerant of baths, but will pull his feet away when it comes to nail cuts. At intake, Cross was reported to be bright and alert. He maintained a relaxed body and allowed all handling by the counselor and was easy to collar. During SAFER Cross was sociable, but was not very attention seeking. He allowed the assessor to conduct all handling items without issue, and was distracted during the tag interaction. Due to Cross’s medical condition paw squeeze could not be fairly conducted so flank squeeze was tested in place of the paw handling, and Cross remained relaxed. During the resources portion of the assessment Cross was not interested in any of the items, and when approaching the helper dog during the dog-dog interaction, Cross had a high tail, body not stiff, and appeared to be interested in interacting. No behavioral concerns were seen while in the care center and Cross appears to be sociable, so the department feels cross can be suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needed coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Flank squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Food: No interest Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward.
