07/02/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Colby, a, elegant young man, only seven months of age, is with us as his building unfriended pets. His former master describes him as loving and obedient, very playful with his five year old human sibling, well behaved when alone in the home and very fond of balls and toys. He would be only partially housetrained. Colby is a bit shy here at the care center. He is tall but still just a baby who misses very much his past life. He can be found at the back of his kennel, cocking his head when someone approaches his door. He looks like a delicate deer resting in the forest. He is such a gorgeous youngster said to be a cross between a Golden and a Pittie. My face is familiar to him and I can leash him easily. He walks well on his long and spindly legs. He even eliminates as we hit the yard. “Getting to know you” is the name of the game. After a number of back and forth, Colby realizes that I am a friend. He comes when called, wagging his tail, sits on command and of course, for treats, and even starts to play ball. Some souls are more delicate than others and Colby owns a very sensitive one. Each encounter brings him more out of his shell, though. And I hope that soon enough, he will be ready for a new home and a new family. Colby is at the Manhattan Care Center, a beautiful pup who will make a wonderful forever best friend.

Colby is unbothered if food is touched while eating, but will growl if you attempt to take his treat”. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. This dog is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up and an adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment. We advise that future adopters should be able to provide positive experiences for Colby. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Colby be given the opportunity to interact at their own pace. Because of his owner surrender profile we also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. He may require positive reinforcement behavior modification to address his guarding behavior. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
