07/19/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Cocoa was calm and a bit aloof when entering the assessment but approached the assessor once coaxed with a neutral body. For the first two handling items, Cocoa remained calm and allowed the assessor to complete the items. She became somewhat uncomfortable during paw handling during the first attempt and growled during the second squeeze. She also became uncomfortable during tag, stopping movement after the 3rd tag, becoming a bit stiff and vocalizing. Cocoa had minimal interest in the food. She showed some concerning behavior during toy and/or rawhide tests -growling, but did not escalate to a snap or bite to the assess-a-hand. Cocoa was surrendered to the care center by her owner due to lack of time; upon intake she remained quiet and calm. During the assessment, Cocoa showed some concerning behaviors during paw handling and during tag, stiffening and growling during paw handling. She also showed the potential to guard toys and rawhide- growling over each item. For these reasons, the Behavior Department recommends Cocoa be placed with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can allow her the time to warm up to new people and to handling at her own pace. Also, a partner that can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home would likely be best. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 3. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor’s touch and disconnected from the Assessor. Stops and stiffens while vocalizing on the last pass. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Body a bit cautious. Squeeze 2: 4. Dog growls. Food: 1. Minimal interest in food, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away. Toy 1: 4. Dog growls. Rawhide: 4. Dog growls. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog, or exits.
