10/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Stealing hearts…impersonating a puppy…launching snuggle assaults…conspiring to wheedle treats…Clarissa’s ‘rap sheet’ is a mile long and all of it points to one conclusion — we’ve nabbed ourselves a professional sweetheart! It’s been several months since this affectionate little black-n-white cookie arrived at the Care Center and from the very moment I met her, I knew Clarissa was special. She’s a velcro dog who likes to be close at all times but if you think that means spending hours sitting sedately on the couch then you don’t know Clarissa! Never hyper or jumpy but always on the go, no matter what life throws her way she wiggles and waggles through it with a whirring tail and a sunny smile. Clarissa’s always eager to socialize with her beloved humans and whether giving or receiving love she’s never anything but soft, happy and easy to handle, the kind of girl who’ll be welcomed with open arms wherever she goes. Though she pulls in her enthusiasm for exploring, Clarissa is a fairly easy leash walker and takes care of her business outside too. When it comes to fellow dogs she’s sociable but needs help curbing her bossy tendencies and learning not to over-react when others boss her in return. Coming from a neglectful home Clarissa’s never truly known what it means to have four-legged friends so she’s looking for an experienced family willing to go ‘all in’ and commit to teaching her the right way to par-tay with her pals. She’s gorgeous, she aced her behavior assessment and after months of patiently waiting she’s ready to ditch the kennel life for good. Why wait a minute longer? Contact our Manhattan Care Center and make today the day Clarissa finally gets to go home!
09/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Clarissa has been in ACC’s care since June. She has been social and interactive with her human caretakers but has shown moderate concerns with other dogs. She has been evaluated twice: a SAFER in June and a more thorough evaluation in September. September assessment summary: Clarissa is affectionate with people and consistently solicits attention. She pulled lightly on leash and jumped up on tester. She explored the room and urine marked. She approached readily when called but was excitable and became distracted. She was relaxed with touch. She was hard to position for squeeze test, mouthed lightly and yelped. She did not guard her food or chew. She was relaxed and greeted the toddler doll, nibbling on the fingers and stayed relaxed when hugged. She watched the assessor when scolded and approached readily after. She showed preliminary dog fighting behavior with the fake dog: mounting, clasping and eventually biting. She was distracted and focused on the fake dog after it was removed and during the female helper test. She was pushy with both female and male helper dog. At the shelter she was in a fight with another female dog from this case. Given this dog’s questionable behavior with dogs and the fact that she is scarred on her head and ears, it is possible that she started as a fighting dog but is not very experienced. Extensive socialization with dogs should be conducted before determining if she’s safe to place in the community. We recommend a behavior modification program and safety tools in order to keep Clarissa and those around her safe. 6/19 SAFER scores: Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the rawhide. Dog – dog 1. Dog approaches the helper, soft body, tail neutral, but not playful. Helper: A1040172
08/27/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs Clarissa is playful but will attempt to assert herself over the other dog. She will mount but responds well to correction. She continues to mount and will persist, despite correction. 9/3 update: Clarissa is playful and solicitious. She may be pushy while attempting to solicit play and may also attempt to mount.
