07/08/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: You would be completely forgiven if you expected Miss China to oink, as she certainly does resemble a little piggy – pleasantly plump, long square nose, low to the ground and so adorable there is no resisting her. A chunky mama in a white and tan coat, with ice blue eyes and a wagging tail. Super friendly and cuddly she’s a great snuggle partner, rolling around in my lap, tail wagging a mile a minute, and making cute little snuggle noises. Just love her! Surrendered by her family as they are moving where she is not welcome, we’re told that she lived with 2 kids ages 6 and 10 with whom she was playful and gentle, likes to be brushed and bathed, is housetrained and only has accidents if she drinks too much water, loves to play fetch, knows ‘sit’ and ‘go’, and lived well with another pit bull although doesn’t like to share her toys or food with other dogs. China and I took a walk outside so that she could show off her good leash manners; she ignored other dogs we passed, content to walk by my side wagging her tail and checking up with me. In play with a young puppy she took a short while to warm up and then engaged in some play. She lay down for a rest in our pen, looking up every once in a while to check out what was going on. According to her former family she’s has a medium activity level, and from what I could see one of her favorite activities is snuggling – and she’s so good at it! Come meet our little piggy doggy, I guarantee you’ll fall in love as I did.
07/08/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
China was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. She was relaxed during handling but would occasionally jump up on the assessor to solicit attention. China remained calm and relaxed while playing tag with the assessor. China began to gulp her food when the assessor reached in to push her out of the bowl with body neutral; however, it only took a bit of pressure from hand to cheek in order to push her out of the food bowl. She took away the toy but had a loose wiggly body and she took away the rawhide and her body was a bit stiff. China was surrendered to the care center by her owner of over a year due to moving; upon intake she was relaxed with a loose body. Her previous owner reported that China is friendly towards strangers and lived with a 6 and 10 year old child whom she was relaxed and playful with. It was also stated that she lived with another dog that she got along with but would growl and snap if the other dog approached her food or toys. However, China is reportedly unbothered when a person moves her food, treats or toys. China remained friendly toward the assessor throughout the assessment. The Behavior Department recommends due to China’s potential to be possessive with food and rawhide she would do best in an experienced home with no young children that can monitor and positively modify any possessive behaviors if they manifest in the home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, mouths the hand, but does not apply pressure. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Food 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body neutral. She lifts head when a bit of pressure from hand is applied to cheek. Toy 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the toy, and her body is neutral. No growling or stiffness. Rawhide 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is a bit stiff. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, China is social, greets the other dog politely, may briefly try to play and offers appropriate corrections.
