06/14/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Chico came to our center after he was found in a vacant home that caught fire. He was friendly and social upon intake. He walked nicely on leash, no pulling. Chico wagged his tail with a soft body during Look item. He leaned in with soft eyes and body, tail wagging. Chico followed at the end of the leash during Tag game, body soft. He did not pull his paw back during both Squeeze attempts, licking assessor’s hand. He lifted his head out of the Food dish once assess-a-hand was applied to his cheek. He playfully engaged with toy, keeping a firm grip and neutral body. Chico did not settle with Rawhide, growled when assess-a-hand approached. He relinquished Rawhide when traded up for treat. Chico approached helper dog at a comfortable pace, ears relaxed and tail at spine level. The Behavior Team feels Chico would do best in an Experienced home with no young children. Due to the potential for possessive behavior with Rawhide, Chico may benefit from learning the command ‘drop it’ and also trade up games. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth, tail wag. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, licks hand. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip, body neutral. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 4. Dog growls. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip neutral.

A volunteer writes:
Oh Chico, is there anything more adorable than your innocent, sunny smile? This young hunk may only have been with us a few days but he’s already earned quite the fan club and everyone who’s met him can’t help singing his praises to the skies – even the behavior assessor! Chico is still just a puppy, soft and loving and all about the socializing so naturally he aced his handling tests with perfect scores across the board. He likes to play but he’s never hyper, prefers to hold his ball tight yet doesn’t guard it and is fine with ‘sharing’ for a game of tug’o’war. He knows how to sit politely on command and take treats ever so softly and when other dogs pass by the pen his happy tail wags even harder. It seems his only flaw is not wanting anyone to touch his rawhide which is a pretty easy fix — don’t give him one! If play time is the main course on a date with Chico, then wiggly lap time is the dessert and we finished ours up with lots of sweet snuggles. What a treat he’ll be for his lucky new family, step up today and tomorrow you could be enjoying some Chico-licious loving of your very own!
