08/03/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Cher and housemate Sonny are with us as their owners are no longer able to care for them. Cher is a tiny speckle of a dog, an overly thin little girl with a patchy coat, long dystrophic nails and multiple tiny scratches from a recent enthusiastic litter. She makes herself even smaller than she is already in her kennel but surprisingly almost springs out of her den as i open her door…A leash is a must, young lady… Cher pulls a little on the leash but slows down after doing her business. Free in a pen, she aims right away at my goodies bag. Another hungry caterpillar… Food might have been scarce and lactation must have wasted most her resources….I feed Cher a generous portion of roast beef. She is now..my friend forever, sitting by my side, lining my legs, like she was my own long time pet.She is not really interested in playing ball or tag but who knows, she might change her mind in a few days.. Cher is sociable with people and other dogs and evolves harmoniously in playgroups. She was awarded an excellent behavior rating at the care center. She is a low key gal, a bit timid, friendly and most likely quite open to become a healthy and happy go lucky doggy girl if given a chance. Cher is waiting at the Manhattan Care Center for her life to turn around. I wish that soon enough, love and good care will be at her door.
07/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Cher was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. She was calm and relaxed during handling. She was distracted and focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag interaction. Cher did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. She had no interest in toys and minimal interest in rawhide. Cher arrived at the care center on 7/28; upon intake she was shy but allowed all handling. Throughout the assessment, Cher remained social and friendly towards the assessor, she showed no behavioral concerns. The Behavior Department feels Cher can go to an average home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against her cheek. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away Dog-Dog: When off-leash with other dogs, Cher greets politely and briefly sniffs the greeter dog. She wanders off and seeks human interaction.
07/29/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off-leash with other dogs, Cher greets politely and briefly sniffs the greeter dog. She wanders off and seeks human interaction. 7/30 update: Cher interacts briefly, then becomes slightly anxious in the pen. 8/2 update: Cher continues to show brief interest in interaction, then becomes anxious. 8/5 update: Cher continues to exhibit anxious behavior while off leash with other dogs but she will engage in brief bouts of play when solicited. 8/6 update: Cher greets the other dog briefly then keeps to herself.
