Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Chelsey came to our center as an owner surrender on 5/14/15. It is reported she lived with young children and a cat and enjoyed playing with both. Chelsey was nervous and shy upon intake. She was cautious while walking on her relief walk for the SAFER assessment. Chelsey maintained a cautious body that was slightly stiff and unsure. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands for Look item, with her tail tucked. She accepted touch for Sensitivity item, again with tail down and body cautious and a bit stiff. Chelsey would not allow Tag item to be completely, spinning away from hand, body crouched and low, repeatedly trying to exit. Due to Tag’s incompletion no other tactile portions of the assessment were conducted. Chelsey had no interest in food, and minimal interest in toys or rawhide, sniffing and then turning away. She approached helper dog at a comfortable pace with ears up and tail at spine level. Due to her nervousness and inability to complete assessment, Chelsey must be placed with a New Hope partner. When relaxed, owner reports Chelsey is playful, confident, affectionate, and friendly, although can be a bit shy sometimes. Chelsey needs to be placed with a New Hope partner that can provide a stable, calm environment so Chelsey can relax and come out of her shell. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a slightly tense body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body a bit stiff and cautious, mouth closed, ears back. Tag: 3. Dog repeatedly turns quickly away when touched and repeatedly tries to exit. Dog may be crouching, tail is tucked, mouth closed, body stiff. Food. No interest. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away. Rawhide 1. Minimal interest. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip long or neutral
