04/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper Dog:A1033354 Chase was brought to the shelter as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. Upon entry to the care center Chase was reported to have a loose and wiggly body, and was very attention seeking. He allowed all handling and was easily collared by the Counselors. During SAFER Chase was very active and pulled hard on the leash. He was sociable towards the assessor, and had soft body language for most of the handling. He did become a bit tense during paw handling, and was distracted during the tag interaction. Chase was difficult to push out of the food bowl; taking bigger bites and would not lift his head from the bowl, and he only showed minimal interest in the toy items. Chase was loose body while settling close when engaged with the rawhide, but would not relinquish the item, and during the dog-dog interaction Chase rushed in quickly towards the helper dog with stiff body language. The department feels Chase shows behaviors suitable for an experienced adopter. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needed coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Body a bit tense Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. He does not lift head when hand is applied to cheek. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog sniffs, then turns away. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide. Dog-dog: 3. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with his tail high, stiff body, head tall, and ears erect.
