A staff member writes: Channel is a bit of a nervous poodle. She seems tense around new people and has not liked being handled. This tiny little lady is going to need an experienced handler who can work with her by providing positive reinforcement and behavior modification. Please let us know if you can help Channel!
Owner Profile
Channel previously lived with one female adult and an 11 year old. The owner stated Channel is fearful but tolerant towards everyone in the household; she doesn’t play with children and won’t socialize with owner. She does come to us with a previous bite history from biting a groomer about 5 months ago. But we do not have much information on how the bite occured.
Basic Information: Channel is approx 4 years old unaltered Poodle mix. Channel was a gift three years old. Owner surrenders Channel due to personal problems.
Social Life and Personality: Channel lived with one female adult and an 11 year old. Owner stated Channel is fearful but tolerant towards everyone in the household. Channel doesn’t play with children and wont socialize with owner. Channel lived with another dog and owner stated Channel will only play with the other dog. If owner is playing with other dog Channel would want attention. Channel behavior is unknown towards cats. She mostly indoors and activity level s high when outdoors but low indoors. Owner describes Channel as shy, fearful, anxious, aloof and friendly at times.
Behavior: Channel has bitten at the groomer 5 months ago because the groomer had a leash over his head and became tense ever since that accident Channel has never went back to the vet/ groomer. Channel is friendly when owner touch her food while and take toys or treats away from her mouth. She enjoys taking bath owner stated. She isn’t bothered when unfamiliar people approaches the house or family member only when owner little sister comes around Channel will growl owner doesn’t know why.
For a New Family to Know: Channel is trained to use the bathroom outdoors in a yard. She knows commands such as sit, down, stay and go. She doesn’t play with toys and not crate trained. Channel rarely seeks attention but is well behaved when home alone. Channel eats wet and dry food mix and sleeps in her bed.
Intake Behavior: Upon intake Channel was nervous and tense. She scanned negative for a microchip and was collared and helped photographed by owner. Channel growled and showed teeth when handler came to pick her up.
Behavior – NH Only
At intake it was reported Channel was nervous and tense, she allowed some handling but also helped by the owner, channel growled and bared teeth when the handler came to get her from the office. During SAFER Channel came into the assessment room very fearful, nervous and alert, she would not interact with the assessor at all, allowed all handling items to be conducted. Channel quickly turns towards the touch with her body low and fearful during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Channel was easy to handle when engaged with the items. When attempted to remove Channel out of her cage she snapped at the handler twice, as she was out of her kennel she still remained nervous and tense with wale eyes. Once the assessment was done, Channel attempted to snap at the handler again when trying to put her back in her kennel. Due to majority of her behavior concerns and also previous bite history stated from the previous owner, the behavior department feels that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time.
