10/18/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: When I first took Chance out I could only mourn all the other times I didn’t – he is a mushy, charismatic, gentle giant! He is usually very quiet in his cage, but once I put him back he’ll voice his discontent. He is big and stunning with a face that is perfectly asymmetrically marked. He has kind eyes and wrinkles around his mouth that appear like laugh lines when he smiles. Chance is easy on leash and seems housebroken. Almost as soon as I ask him to “sit” he goes for bonus points and shows me that he knows “down” too. He is very treat motivated, but takes them politely. He softly wiggles his tail when I speak to him and will lick my hands when I pet him – incredibly sweet! When the wind caused some metal roll up doors to make a lot of clanging noises, Chance got a little spooked and kept looking over his shoulder, but looked up at me too – either for reassurance, or to let me know we were in this together! He is reported to be relaxed, playful and respectful with children and to get along with most dogs (he played regularly with a Pomeranian, what a pair!). Chance is used to living in a yard with a dog house, but he’s hoping to find a family that will welcome him indoors…and maybe even on the couch! Chance would be so happy to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!
10/10/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Chance came to us as an owner surrender on 10/7/15. It was reported by the owner that Chance is relaxed and playful with children and certain dogs. The owner said that if he does not like a certain dog he will show his teeth if the other dog got close. Chance was also said to growl if other people touched his food bowl besides the owner himself. Chance was very interested in interacting with the assessor when entering the behavior room with soft body language. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without concern. He showed some concerning behavior during the food bowl test – stiffening and growling, but did not snap at or bite the assess-a-hand. Chance only displayed minimal interest in the toy and rawhide items on this portion of the assessment. Due to Chance’s potential for possessiveness over food the behavior department believes that he would be best placed with an experienced owner with no children. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, and open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. He indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Dog licks hand. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then turns away. Rawhide1: Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then turns away. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Chance is a bit nervous and initially avoids interaction. He eventually engages briefly in play when solicited.
10/09/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Chance greets other dogs politely and can be sexually motivated with some dogs. Based on his behavior during playgroup, the Behavior Department recommends that Chance can go to a home with a female dog and may go to a home with a male dog but we recommend that a pre-adoption interaction be required. He seems to do well with non-playful dogs so we recommend he be placed with tolerant, calm dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Chance is a bit nervous and initially avoids interaction. He eventually engages briefly in play when solicited. 10/10 update: Chance is nervous but will greet the other dogs briefly. He is more interested in interacting with the handlers. 10/11 update: Chance greets well but is a bit sexually motivated. 10/13 update: Chance may greet briefly but is mostly sexually motivated and continues to attempt to mount after correction. 10/14 update: Chance greets briefly and is sexually motivated but takes correction. 10/15 update: Chance greets politely then becomes sexually motivated. 10/16 update: Chance greets politely and then keeps to himself.
