07/03/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Champ previously lived with 4 children ages 7-21, and he was reported to be playful but somewhat rough. Around strangers Champ was reported to be hesitant but once he is given the opportunity to sniff them will become relaxed. Champ has lived with a cat and the owner states Champ will chase the cat, but when around other dogs Champ is playful. It was stated that when left alone in the house Champ will sometimes chew household items, but does well in his crate for up to 8 hours, and he was said to be successfully housebroken. At intake it was noted that Champ was not receptive to introductions or handling. When approaching Champ in his kennel he hard barks and snaps but once the kennel is open he is easily removed, and pulls a bit on the leash. During SAFER Champ had stiff body language and was only tolerant of some handling, but when an attempt was made to reach for Champs paw, he became very tense and gives a hard stare while lifting his paw away from the assessor. Due to this response and safety concerns no other handling items were attempted. During the resources portion of the assessment Champ was had stiff body language and could not be pushed out of the food bowl. He only showed minimal interest in the toys, and when engaged with the rawhide, he held a firm grip and would not relinquish the item, but his body was not stiff. Due to the concerns displayed while in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner. Look: 3. Dog will not allow the assessor hold his head, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, and mouth closed, lip long, ears back, and yawns. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needed coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 4. Dog closes mouth, gives a hard stare, becomes stiff and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Food: 3. Dog follows the dish, his tail between his legs, ears are forward. His body is stiff. Dog does not lift his head from the bowl when hand is applied to his cheek. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog licks, then turns away. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy or rawhide, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
